Those games are all about art style and not really pushing any technical boundaries, though I suppose if we go by strictly being representative of a human figure, then PS3 generally had that.Basically it's about how much of a jump you get, in ps1-2 you go from boxy hands to more or less normal representations of humans. Ps3-4 was nowhere near as dramatic. Ps5 is even less so.
During ps2 you had Okami, and ps3 gave us Xrd, which are some of the most visually captivating games, so it is possible with just that much technology to have perfect visuals already. Any more work put there hence could be spent elsewhere, in things like writing or art style or mechanical balancing.
Starting price at $69.99+ does not help either. I haven't seen prices like that since the cartridge days in the 16 bit and Nintendo 64 era. By the time I ever do get Returnal, there'll already be probably two price drops.I wonder how many of these first wave PS 5 exclusives are going to have trouble showing good sales numbers, simply due to people having trouble obtaining the exclusive consoles needed to play them.

I remember finding a Sears Christmas catalog online and had the price for early Sega Genesis games. Golden Axe was at one point $89.99. that's a game that can be beaten between a half hour to an hour and a half. Like I said before, I'm mostly sticking with AA or indie games. This gen has almost nothing to offer for me from the AAA landscape.
Yeah I'm mainly a fan of what we'd I guess call AA Japanese games, which don't look all that incredible on a pure technical level. Like Persona 5 is literally a ps3 game and the ps4 port just reduces loading times and not much else, yet it is commonly praised as being gorgeous and stylish visually. I really don't think it needs anything more that would justify spending on a new machine and couldn't be improved more by other sorts of methods that are more within its strengths which are in the writing and plot and art style. Those games are all about art style and not really pushing any technical boundaries, though I suppose if we go by strictly being representative of a human figure, then PS3 generally had that.
However, I sure don’t think I’d be satisfied with PS3 level visuals after seeing what has come after. I guess I’m just more a fan of bells and whistles like POM, AF, SSR, HDR, volumetrics, more nuanced animations, better shaders, far better texture resolutions, exponentially higher poly counts, and I haven’t even experienced ray tracing personally but it’s certainly impressive.
I don’t think enhanced visual design and other areas like better AI, more dynamic environments and damage models, increased player agency, etc. need to be mutually exclusive, especially with the current consoles. It’s more about what the developers are willing to commit to and properly allocating their resources within a given budget.
We could still have amazingly designed fantasy worlds with technical flourishes but I get what you mean. I’d love to eventually play something like how Avatar looks as an example. Diving off mountain tops and swooping around on those bird beast things in VR would be pretty amazing.Yeah I'm mainly a fan of what we'd I guess call AA Japanese games, which don't look all that incredible on a pure technical level. Ultimately I guess it's a difference in end goal, my end goal is for games to look like a stuidio ghibli movie (hell Ninokuni already does that, also on ps3 lol) not to look like I'm looking out of my window.
Please tell me it said "cooch potato" PLEASE tell me it said that!Stupid google speak.
No, for whatever reason it interpreted gym, instead of gen. I was on my phone at the time. Please tell me it said "cooch potato" PLEASE tell me it said that!
Yeah I assume you usually post on your phone. You have a lot of typos that seem to be autocorrect inspired. I just really REALLY hoped it was cooch potato. I mean, I know it wouldn't be, because most autocorrects don't use sexual slang as terms to suggest, but....you know...cooch potato. How could you NOT want that? No, for whatever reason it interpreted gym, instead of gen. I was on my phone at the time.
Whenever I'm at work, I use my phone. Whenever I'm at home, I use my laptop. In this particular case, I had the day off, but I was in the bathroom at the time so I responded on my phone.Yeah I assume you usually post on your phone. You have a lot of typos that seem to be autocorrect inspired.
Yeah shits getting closer to the old $108 games of the PS2 era. I remember paying that for Tekken 4 when it released.Starting price at $69.99+ does not help either. What the hell was in that version of Tekken 4 to cost that much back then? That even puts expansion pack N64 games to shame.Yeah shits getting closer to the old $108 games of the PS2 era. I remember paying that for Tekken 4 when it released.
That's impossible. Most PS2 games that were AAA were prices at $50. Some priced higher than others, but those were mostly special editions or came with bonuses when pre-ordered. Where the hell did you buy it from? A store scalper?Yeah shits getting closer to the old $108 games of the PS2 era. I remember paying that for Tekken 4 when it released.
Do you keep forgetting I’m an Australian? At the time of the PS2 my currency was trading at $0.50USD to $1.00AUD and then of course there’s cost of importing and various fees and taxes and the merchant profit margin. That's impossible. That explains why it cost you so much. And I just checked GameFAQs for Tekken 4. No AUS version was ever released there. My God, you guys got screwed more than Europe or the UK. Granted, Tekken 4 is not the best of the series, but it's the principle of the matter. At the time of the PS2 my currency was trading at $0.50USD to $1.00AUD and then of course there’s cost of importing and various fees and taxes and the merchant profit margin.
