So fellow gamers, what title will you be closing out 2021 with, and what title will you be ringing in 2022 with?

I’m thinking each will be DOOM 2016 for me. I’m enjoying Wolfenstein: TNO currently but it’s a bit too much of a depressing drag thematically where I’m at in chapter 10, and I’ve never felt that in DOOM which I’m roughly half way through.

In any case, enjoy and cheers to a happy, healthy and fruitful 2022!

I guess Batman: The Telltale Series?

As in, I started playing on the 31st, and likely I'll finish it sometime in January, so...yay?

I think I played CP2077 last week, so that's my last. First...I'll have to let you know when it happens. Smart money would be on Total Warhammer 2 or CP2077

Corner of No and Where
I play Battletech almost every day, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was my first. And its certainly gonna be my last.
I dunno, I like the last thing I do with my day to sit down with a glass or two of whiskey on ice, put on a Marvel movie, and play some Battletech. Just fucking...relax. Just forget about the world outside my room for a few hours.
So that's gonna be what I do today. Maybe this time next year I'll be at a party with an SO. Maybe not. It'll be interesting to see.

I closed out 2021 with Genesis Noir. I was working from home and I start my days pretty early so I was able to play parts of it throughout the day.
I am in the mood for smaller games for a while, probably until Elden Ring.
Today I plan on starting 2022 with the Forgotten City or Unpacking, depending on which of my computers I'll be in front of.

I'm just going through Gamepass and grabbing stuff I remember hearing/seeing good things about and trying them.

Last game I completed in 2021 was Cuphead, which I (finally) played through in the last few days. Was great fun! Should've given it a try a lot sooner.

I actually ended up sticking with Wolfenstein: TNO for both since I never got around to booting up DOOM last year. I'm at chapter 12 now apparently on the way to a lunar base. Should be interesting mechanics if the game adjusts for lower gravity.

There is kind of a lower gravity thing going on but only outside the base. Inside gravity works the same as earth because.....Nazi magic gravity generators or something.

I can't really complain. Half the stuff in the new Wolfenstein games makes no real sense as far as science and engineering are concerned and that's ok because the point is duel wielding assault rifles to kill Nazis.

What’s funny is I personally don’t much care for dual wielding in this game because it impedes mobility, which is often critical in the closed in firefights like on the u-boat. I do like using the Laserkraftwerk but it would be nice to have a limited slot of portable charges for it, kinda like throwing knives and ‘nades. I like the sci-fi wackiness of it all as it would feel rather dissonant having a fully serious backstory with this kind of gameplay design. It’s balanced pretty well overall, and the game also does a good job of fleshing out the alternate history with the news clippings and other collectibles.

Yesterday I played The Forgotten City by recommendation of Yahtzee and this morning I started The Wild At Heart by recommendation of Jack and Marty.
TFC was unexpectedly fun with its weird combination of clever structure and "nostalgic" Skyrim jank. This time loop game is all about talking to everyone to decode what goes on during one day and when you start manipulating events by having one other guy run around and save everyone, it is really cool. Then a couple of times the game makes me go around shooting guys with arrows and it's horrible. There are four endings and I kept at going for the "canon" (I think) which is arguing with a dude perfectly.

Wild At Heart is super retro Nintendo stuff and I dunno if I'm gonna stick with it. The art and world are nice but the mechanics kind of piss me off. You get around obstacle by tossing around these little cute creatures and that means you can screw up by aiming poorly even if you know what to do. Then there's a day/night cycle and resourcing so after a couple of hours I was already doing a lot of menus and backtracking and I hate that shit. I'll keep at it for a bit see where it goes.

My last of 2021 was Murder By Numbers, a sort of visual novel and picross combo. Kind of like a simplified Ace Attorney. A little too simple maybe. The story is engaging enough, if a bit predictable, and the characters are fun, but puzzle complexity plateaus about halfway in and there are no real fail states, meaning after a while I mostly lost interest in doing the puzzles and just brute forced them to get to the next story bit.

First of 2022 is Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Getting some Igavania on. Controls a little slow and stiff tho. The only other game in the series in this style I've played was Order of Ecclesia, and I don't remember it playing like this. I suppose that'll improve when I get more abilities.

I liked the Forgotten city, except for the shooting bits which I have no idea why they are in there other then "Well, we programmed a bow so we gotta put some zombies in there".

I felt the big twist of the cannon ending killed my immersion a bit because while it tries so hard to over explain everything, it invoked a particularly tired trope that I felt didn't need to be used(I'm fine with Ancient Aliens in the Assassin's Creed Series but that's got it's whole sci-fi conspiracy vibe thing baked into it. I don't feel it benefits this story ) and also opened up a bunch of new questions that don't get addressedCharon bringing people back from the dead, even 2000 years later because......reasons. It's kind of a shame because I was really into the whole thing until that point.
