I think that's why some recent horror movies, like Don't Breath and Happy Death Day, have been a positive surprise for me. Seeing as horror as a genre is not something the studio is going to be too worried about in terms of mass market, family friendly appeal, and the budgets for the movies not being that high anyway, they seem to just let the directors kinda just do what they want to.
Im pretty obessive about indie horror and thats kind of a key factor. Its not so much that I enjoy horror, but I feel like its one of the few genres that hasn't been completely absorbed by big studios. An indie horror film maker can still pull together 5-30 million dollars and have complete control of the film including the look and feel. On a related note there was a big fiasco where the Thing Prequel in 2011 was doesn't completely with puppets and animatronics, but the studio for whatever reason decided audiences only like CGI now so they quite literally paid a team to paint over all the effects with CGI which made it look like a PS3 cutscene. The original crew had a very vocal meltdown about it and theres a bunch of videos online where you can see the before and after. Like anything else big corporations ruin everything.

Thinking on it I can say confidently I would have enjoyed Ready Player One or if they hadnt let Spielberg and his studio do it. I wish some Indie studio had snagged the rights before it blew up and did it with practical effects instead of just shitting out CGI nonsense.

Ready Player One would have had the same problems with or without practical effects. The main problem being the source material itself. If anything, the movie is a huge improvement over the book. At the end of the day, the movie adaptation is just average. The CGI I actually didn't mind, and at least made sense. I would still watch both Tron movies over RPO though.

Though I won't argue about the first Tron which is still a good movie if a bit plodding. Tron Legacy didn't properly set ground rules and ended up being too much of a mess for me to enjoy.

Despite the problems, I still enjoyed it for what it was. Also, this scene:

I still shed some tears. The music definitely hits all the right spots.

Similar to Blade Runner 2049, theres a lot of very amazing visuals. I talk myself into rewatching it every couple years, but its mostly just for certain scenes they did a great job on.

I consider Blade Runner 2049 just as good as the original. Even better in terms of pacing.

Don't care; my opinion, not yours and everybody else's.

My mom's a big fan of the original Blade Runner, and she enjoys the sequel. Since she enjoys the sequel just as much, then that director did something right. That's all that matters to me.

History repeats itself. The original didn't do well in theaters, but gained an audience over time and being vindicated by history and home video. The same has already happened the 2049. Oh the life of irony.

Yeah, dunno if I would call Blade Runner 2049 as good as the original, but I would say it was at least a worthy sequel to the original, and one of the few sequels so long later which can claim that.

Which version of the original?
The Final Cut. I've never seen the Theatrical cut, and I've never seen the Director's Cut either. I refuse to see the former, and from what I heard, The Final Cut is basically a slightly better version of the Director's Cut, so there is not much point.
