RRR (aka Rise Roar Revolt)

First time I've watched an Indian film. Fully watched it I mean, not seen clips on youtube. Man, this shit is wild. It's basically a what-if story about two revolutionaries who historically never met, but what if they did? It's kind of silly at times, and pretty over the top at all times, but I had a great time with. The thing I actually liked best is that this movie has zero chill. The heroes are the most unflappably heroic, capable of the most ludicrous feats. The villains the most mustache-twirlingly evil. The emotions are the biggest feels. The songs the most on the nose. The dance numbers the danciest. And the action scenes are just these extravagant spectacles, and honestly the price of admission by themselves. Maybe a bit too overlong at 3 hours, sometimes felt like they could've trimmed some fat to improve pacing, but not a dealbreaker.

Also, it has this
Hey, I saw that one too yesterday!

It was a lot of fun. Indian action movies are just wild, man. Three hours long, some of the most baroque action sequences you see outside of a John Woo flick and of course full of singing and dancing. I'm actually surprised that none of these directors, Rajamouli in particular, have been poached by Hollywood to direct some superhero movie or Fast and the Furious installment yet.

I wasn't a fan of some of the overt patriotism in it. I don't like that sort of thing when the Americans do it either. But at least the nationalist sentiment in this was mostly directed against the British Empire who are, if nothing else, a deserving target. Needs a sequel where Ram and Bheem travel to Britain to kill Winston Churchill.

Who knows. Maybe they're afraid they'll be stunted on. Shame tho, could bring some style and energy to a fair few franchises, and maybe prevent shit like this:

So boringly shot and edited by comparison. Bollywood dance scene my ass.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: Great / Great

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the "Hot Takes" thread, but I really enjoyed it. In fact, I can honestly say the Strange movies are probably my favorite in all the MCU. They knew how to "let go and let God," and just have fun. I was entertained.

Best MCU movie since End Game, which sadly, is not writing much as there has been so much that I've almost given up on them but even so, this was really good. Helps to be a Sam Raimi fan. Lots of his flourishes there. I understand they had to reshoot 85% of it and that earlier, it was another bait and switch with Strange being a co-star guest in HIS movie. That really would have been terrible.

Yesterday I went to the theater early, got a matinee price on seeing Top Gun: Maverick . Typically, I sit far enough from the screen to comfortably take it all in but was advised this movie is meant to be seen as large and up front as possible so I sat right up front. I was the only one in the front 1/2 of the theater.

Back in the day (1970s and early 80s) they would try to make the sub woofer rumble of a movie loud enough to vibrate your seat and called it "sensaround". Well. This movie did this extra bit without fan fare. I can't wait to buy it on UHD and see if my own 5.1 can do it.

The over all quality of this sequel to the 1980s Top Gun is like comparing today's Doctor Strange to 1970s porn mustache Dr. Strange. It absolutely blew me away.

The most fun I've had at the theater since Infinity War (while End Game was very satisfying, Infinity War, I think, was better).

A+

Why did they have to reshoot?
That's just how those movie are made. One person in a test audience somewhere complains about something, and they reshoot half of the movie.
Test audience reaction is noted in lots of stories but to what were they reacting? I recall some time ago complaints by Cumberbatch himself that the story wasn't about him. He was something of supporting character in HIS movie. There was no character development for him. I imagine it was more American Chavez's movie which is fine. But then, don't call the movie Dr. Strange. You are going to piss off his fan base, me included.
Other issues were audience confusion. It REALLY helped to have seen Wandavision. Well, what if you had not? One should not have needed to see that show to enjoy this movie. So the director was caught between trying to ensure the audience understood what was happening and why at the risk of expounding too much... telling rather than showing which is a big no no in script writing. Something to avoid.

Im usually a sucker for superhero movies, even the not so great ones. To the point thats almost a character flaw. Ive already watched The Batman 3 times and its like a 3 hour movie. I've watched "no way home" at least 5 times now. With that context, I havent watched Strange 2 since I saw it in theaters despite being free on Disney. Idk, theres usually some magic moment that compells me to rewatch this stuff, but with Strange 2 it just didnt grab me.

I cant think of a single moment that made my eyeballs pop out of my skull or tug at my heartstrings. I think wanda would have been more compelling if her logic wasnt that of 5 year old. The illuminati were utter fuckin morons and..idk even evil strange was meh. I was expecting something more monstrous. I was expecting more universes in a movie with multiverse in the title. Big Ol' shrug for me.

Its not like Dark World bad or anything just.. forgettable. Goes on the lower dust collection shelf with Black Window, though even Black Window had some pretty funny moments.

This is the perfect place to post this though. This is the thread where we go to not agree on anything movie related.

I liked it. Best Marvel movie since End Game. But best crit that struck me asked a question. Am I in a hurry to rewatch it? Like you, I've not only watched "No Way Home" a bunch, I bought it from Amazon Prime (I don't consider this to be a Marvel movie but it sure straddles the line, even having Doc Strange in it). But this? Really, not in a hurry. I will watch on youtube the 30 seconds they travel through a 1/2 dozen universes.

ITMT: Netflix "Spiderhead". C-
Trailer makes it look great. Cast and director make it look great. I should have checked Rotten Tomatoes. Fans and critics are writing meh and worse than meh (may be a problem with aggregators. You give it a mild thumbs down and you might as well be calling it a total bomb.)
Great cast and Top Gun: Maverick's director! How could this not be great?

Well, it isn't. Doesn't deserve a flunking grade. It isn't broken. But after watching it, it is fair to ask, "why was this committed to video?" Just not good.

The most compelling items in the movie are not plot points but explain character.

Briefly, Thor is testing Mr. Fantastic and others to see the impact of stuff on them.

Don't watch unless you are really entertainment starved.

I gotta watch me the 3 hour RRR on Netflix instead.

Hence:
I was entertained.
I am not a sucker for superhero movies. Frankly, I'm tired of them after the absolute deluge of them over the past decade or so. If one entertains me, it's better than the slew of those that didn't, and the Strange films both entertained me.

I don't approach superhero movies with the fine toothed-combed of a sommelier, critiquing the legs and subtle notes comprising the complexities of it's flavor, etc.; I turn my brain off, and simply ask that one doesn't waste my free time. Villain's motivation? Who cares? At least Wanda's was a bit more intimate and immediate making the film feel more self-contained versus a lot of the other MCU films which are basically "And theeeeeen....." build-ups to the next Endgame-esque all-skate where they expect people to blow their load at dozens of popular heroes on screen at the same time for three hours. And while we're fussing over misleading titles, "Endgame" has about nine dozen MCU films coming in it's wake; not sure which game ended, but everyone's still playing.

As for meriting a re-watch being a measure of intrinsic quality, I don't tend to watch a movie "again" for weeks, if not months or years, even the ones I really like, so given this film has been out less than 2 months and I've only recently watched it, I probably won't watch it again for a while, but unlike most of the other MCU titles, I won't mind watching it again at some point, and probably will.

All that said, I'm not a cinephile. I like the movies I like, and don't the ones I don't. I don't have the time or interest to rank them or compare them to each other on niggling levels as many do around here, so my opinion is my own, and often won't align with those of the "experts."

TL;DR? Don't listen to me.

Upgrade (Prime, purchase? Did I purchase this? Who knows)
Mostly standard revenge plot elevated by mild cyberpunk themes projected through a ponderous grime with an industrial score. An acquaintance of mine was so sure the lead actor was Tom Hardy, until they were corrected by my amazing highly-sought IMDB web search skills: which only then caused curiosity as to how much of a difference he would make if that were the case. The fight scenes are directed with distinct fun style, something the MCU lot are still (IMO) failing to achieve. Though I did chuckles a bit at the robot "brrrr!" sound effects when not-Tom Hardy was fighting with his clearly human fleshy limbs lol. It was alright in the end.

Lapsis (All 4, Channel 4, film 4, some kind of 4)
Sci-fi satire of the gig economy, it literally says in its description. Thanks for making that undeniably clear beforehand. It's a kinda cute low budget affair, more akin to an artistically documented school field trip, about a working class guy looking after his brother, trying to get work, finding some laying "quantum cables" across interchangeable woodland while using the company's weird app to figure out what he's supposed to be doing. It's quite low key, minimal soundtrack, pleasantly shot and acted, with clever use of what must be a sparse budget (there's these adorable clunky work robots I can't help but love) and a couple of obvious (to some?) things to say in an understated quirky manner. Not too bad methinks!

The Kitchen Brigade (7/10)

A French film that focuses on food, because of course it does.

Anyway, about 80% of this film might have landed in 8 territory, but the last 20% brings it down. Basically, focuses on an aspiring cook that, after leaving her job after getting into a conflict with her owner, ends up working in a hostel that's temporarily sheltering illegal (sorry, "undocumented") migrants in France. I don't know how accurate this is, but basically, all the boys there are under 18, and are trying to find ways to stay in the country, before turning 18 where they'd be deported (it's later revealed that one of them already is over 18 and is subsequently deported). Basically, it turns out that the best food is the friendships we make along the way, so the chef teaches them to cook, while the head of the hostel is trying to set up a vocational course - apparently, if the course is set up and they're accepted, then they can stay in the country.

Like I said, I have no idea how true to life this is. The film never speechifies on the topic, but it's clearly on the side of the migrants/refugees, even if their backstories range from fleeing war to simply seeking better economic opportunities. I'd argue that there isn't an identical similarity here, but that's my view, the film has another.

A bigger problem, however, is how in the last 20% or so, the film veers way off course in terms of pacing and context. I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of material was left on the cutting room floor here, or maybe they ran out of budget, because a lot of scenes don't really flow well together. We basically enter a whole new sub-plot as the protagonist enters a competition called "The Cook" (not "Le Cook," for some reason) that has her briefly reunite with her old boss, in a scene that lasts about five seconds, and there's never anything beyond that. We rush through to the finals, where the winner will win 50,000 euros to set up their own restaurant. Basically, she uses it as a publicitly stunt, using her students as her cooks to raise awareness, which is a nice twist, but it's spoiled by there being so little context up to this point. For instance, it's hard to portray the use of the boys as chefs as a twist when the rules of the competition haven't been established up to this point. But to go from a more personal film to a more hectic film in the last 20% of running time is such a swerve in direction, that it didn't quite work for me.

Anyway, she wins, she gets the 50,000 euros, which she uses to set up the cooking vocational course (I think, it's vague, again, I'm not sure how the rules of the competition really work), some of the boys get to stay on, some of them don't, the end.

Anyway, good, but not great.

In my view a very solid science fiction movie with some great designs for all its tech and other aesthetics. The only issues I personally have is that the montage sequence tries to jam in a bit too much and the whole ‘recruiting the quirky screwups’ thing is getting a little old. But these are for my money minor quibbles. Solid flick, take the kids.

It felt like a movie that a director made who wanted to put scenes and stuff into their movie. Quite rare for the MCU.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire, the 2001 Disney animated feature.

There is one moment in this movie that kinda breaks this movie apart for me, and it was in this climax where the female charcater Kida, princess and daughter to the King of Atlantis, merged with "The Heart of Atlantis" a kind of crystals that's the life force of the whole civilization.

She merges with it and I don't know becomes unto that of a goddess.

So what happens right after this scene? She just gets willy nilly caged in a locker type thing by the bad guy mercenaries led by Rourke.

All that flash and lights and implications of what she has become and.....nothing. She didn't force choke the bad guys outright with her new found powers or something. And I'm like "What the fuck movie?"

The "Montage of Loss" sequence thing was already kind of done in "UP" a decade or so ago. Though in that case, Carl actually did have a full, happy life with his wife before she died. In this case, Buzz....just decided to not stick around very much to actually enjoy time with his friends because he was too focused on his work.

I saw the movie today with the family. My kid loved it, I enjoyed it a lot, a very enjoyable sci-fi adventure flick. My only gripes of note are: The plot sets up "Big bad ship with big bad robots" as the primary adversary, but then contrives to keep throwing obstacles in front of them so Buzz has time to bond with his misfits and really little other reason(and to pad the runtime up to 100 minutes) and the Time Traveling stuff starts to feel a bit much when Future!Buzz keeps trying to murder Present!Buzz. There's also the issue that the big twists feels like the same one from the 1990's Lost in Space movie.

I also have to ask if they ever sent an SOS for rescue. Because by the end they've been on that planet close to a century and you'd think somebody would have sent a search party looking for them by then.

Top Gun: Maverick - F-14/10

Okay, this is a flag waver and a circlejerk for the US Navy. If this is somehow a surprise to you, DM me so I can tell you about this bridge in Sydney Harbour I need to sell.

When this movie was announced, my first thought was “How do you improve on Top Gun’s by now legendary opening sequence?”. The movie’s answer is to just do it again, same title card, font and music just with FA-18s and F-35s instead. Manipulative as fuck but it works by jingo, it works.

And honestly so does the rest of the movie. It’s not groundbreaking in anyway but it’s fun, moves at a good pace and is surprisingly heartfelt at times: you’ll know it when you see it.

Aside from Cruise, loony space pope he may be but he’s a charming bastard, the MVPs are Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly. Teller, especially with that moustache, looks like he could be Edward’s son with his softer features coming from Meg Ryan and he’s more tolerable here than anywhere I’ve seen him prior. Connelly is also very well cast; her attitude bounces off Cruise very well and she’s got the sort of grit I imagine anyone would need to put up Maverick’s bullshit.

If you loved, ironically or otherwise, the original Top Gun you’ll probably get a hoot out of this. Give it a shot.

Also if anyone attempts to spoil the ending for you, kick them in the bollocks. Don’t think about it, just do it.

Invasion USA (1952)

Propaganda film about how people in the US should take their military spending seriously, and in order to combat communism, should all work together for the state and not their own personal fortunes. Which, um, there's a problem there.

It's rather well done, has plenty of oomph to the propagana-ising, though goes on too long. Also, the characters like dressing nicely and going to the bar to watch TV and talking about their country being attacked instead of doing anything useful, though one of them keeps trying to join different branches of the military and keeps getting turned down because they've got loads of people trying to sign up now, and they should have signed up earlier when there was time.

EDIT: They forgot to renew copyright and it's now public domain and legally available to view on youtube.
