Elijah Wood with a sexually dismantling bowl hair cut is a boy who visits his estranged father in the middle of nowhere after receiving an apparently heartfelt invitation letter from him in this dark offbeat comedy, played with the necessary amount of dryness to maintain tension where needed. It's best to go in knowing as little as possible, as it's just a more fun journey overall. And Micheal Smiley is a fucking workhorse, I'm seeing him everywhere, yet never disappoints and somehow never overstays his welcome.

Not a good movie but I had such low expectations that I was OK with that. Fun to look at. I love these characters and situations.

Worst thing in it was the editing. Think Game of Thrones Season 8 as it regards people traveling from place to place. These people for a major part of the movie are teleporting. You get whiplash as they whiz from place to place while they seemingly don't notice that it should be kinda hard getting to all these places so fast.

But, it was what I wanted for a weekday night. B

Kevin Hart portrays a struggling entrepreneur who tries to mend a tense relationship with his wife by surprising her with a weekend getaway. After dropping her off for a spa day, he goes to prepare their cabin, and a mix up with the address finds him mistaken for a hitman, the Man from Toronto, portrayed by Woody Harrelson whom know one has ever seen, including his mysterious handler of 20 years. Harrelson "insists" that Hart continue the ruse until the contract is completed. Hilarity ensues.

It's a Kevin Hart joint; you know what to expect. A lot of jokes about his diminutive stature. A lot of Hart's tough guy flexing whilst being completely inept in such areas. It was fun.

Well, I recommend the Hart/Cranston version (not seen the original French version.) Both put up some impressive, moving performances.

Top Gun: Maverick - F-14/10

Okay, this is a flag waver and a circlejerk for the US Navy. If this is somehow a surprise to you, DM me so I can tell you about this bridge in Sydney Harbour I need to sell.

When this movie was announced, my first thought was “How do you improve on Top Gun’s by now legendary opening sequence?”. The movie’s answer is to just do it again, same title card, font and music just with FA-18s and F-35s instead. Manipulative as fuck but it works by jingo, it works.

And honestly so does the rest of the movie. It’s not groundbreaking in anyway but it’s fun, moves at a good pace and is surprisingly heartfelt at times: you’ll know it when you see it.

Aside from Cruise, loony space pope he may be but he’s a charming bastard, the MVPs are Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly. Teller, especially with that moustache, looks like he could be Edward’s son with his softer features coming from Meg Ryan and he’s more tolerable here than anywhere I’ve seen him prior. Connelly is also very well cast; her attitude bounces off Cruise very well and she’s got the sort of grit I imagine anyone would need to put up Maverick’s bullshit.

If you loved, ironically or otherwise, the original Top Gun you’ll probably get a hoot out of this. Give it a shot.

Also if anyone attempts to spoil the ending for you, kick them in the bollocks. Don’t think about it, just do it.

Also as an aside, seeing the original TG after it makes it seem so cheesy now. I get the technological/filming limitations of the time, but goddamn those romantic sequences with that “Take My Breath Away” intro bleeding into every bloody scene was…let’s just say it really helped that the new movie left that shit out this time because it’s MST3K-laugh-worthy now.

Thor: Love and Thunder - 8/10

A few things I'd change personally, but nothing major. Great time for me. Its also kind of funny that the soundtrack album is essentially a Guns N Roses greatest hits album. Also holy shit Natalie Portman is just gorgeous in her Mighty Thor outfit.

I now await any and all accusations of being everything wrong with a cinema audience.

Watched Captain Marvel...or at least the first 2 minutes or so, it looked painfully generic so I put Master and Commander on. Quite decent movie, worth rewatching every so often.

I was surprised by Bale's Gor. Not because it wasn't a well done role, but all the reviews were like "Oh he's top tier Marvel villain!" and "He break the mold of villains for Marvel movies!" And for me it just further proves media screenings don't see the feature length cut of the movie, just a selection of scenes so they can write a review. Because Gor is barely in the movie, and he barely does anything. He spends most of the time hamming it up for a group of kids, and most of his God rampage is done off screen. Id have loved to see Gor actually kill the Behemoth god creature.
and yeah Crowe's Zeus was just bad. Like interesting role, 1000% wrong actor. This movie felt like Batman and Robin to Ragnarock's Batman Forever.

Watched a Netflix original, Red Notice. It was an action comedy. Had some decent action, I got some laughs, it delivered on the promise. It wasn't anything spectacular, and it was definitely Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson being Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, but that's not necessarily a bad thing to me, and the chemistry between the two of them was pretty good. I'm down for the sequel they blatantly set up, but I wouldn't go to theaters to watch it or anything.

Born on the Fourth of July, 8/10

This is an Oliver Stone biopic about Ron Kovic, a Vietnam vet turned anti-war activist in the 60s and 70s. Considering it's from 1989 this film feels decades ahead of its time. It's a really raw, unflinching and uncompromising portrayal of Vietnam fervor, PTSD, abandonment of veterans and all the baggage these broken men brought home with them. Cruise is genuinely great in the central role, and I'm frankly astonished that I never see this performance mentioned anywhere. Young Cruise is perfect for the role, since he manages to embody both the bright-eyed, upbeat naivete and the harsh, broken nihilism the character requires. The film also avoids cheesy Hollywood-isms, choosing to just show things in a matter of fact, everyday way, which makes Ron's state really sink in the further it goes on. You really get a sense of how Ron tries to return to his former life, but no matter how hard he tries, something has been broken inside of him. There are no major issues with it, besides maybe the pacing. Since the movie's meat lies in Ron's life after Vietnam the first act can feel kind of rushed as we see him go through high school. A fantastic positive surprise and highly recommended.

I also watched about 20 minutes of Pitch Perfect on TV,

and based on what I saw I don't think this film has aged well at all, despite being less than a decade old. I don't know if it struck a chord with the Glee crowd because that show was big at the time, but man, there just is no way to make acapella singing cool. I legit had trouble parsing what the movie was going for. It wasn't absurd enough to be a parody, not funny enough to be a straight-faced comedy, and definitely not compelling enough for me to be engaged. For the most part it felt like a completely typical american college comedy with all the tropes, except this time it's acapella singing and an almost all-female cast. I previously mentioned how Mean Girls managed to be relatable to me despite being squarely aimed at american audiences, and this film fails at that. I turned it off at the part where it seemed the movie was genuinely expecting me to feel tension about an acapella singing competition. For me to care it would have either needed to be way more ridiculous and absurd, or to feel more relatable to someone outside of the american college experience. Anna Kendrick is super hot though, so points for that I guess.

It's Morbin' Time.

It's the same dour, underlit, ugly-looking thing Sony did with Venom, with even more horrible effects - stuff that not only looks fake but looks aesthetically unpleasant, like the blurry After Effects that trails behind Morbius' movements. It looks like he's trailing a bad smell in a comic strip. And of course the face-swap app thing they did on his face. Everything just looks so cheap and ugly.

And then the script is whole different ballpark of awful. It's a nasty case of tell-don't-show. Morbius is told he's best friends with Milo, after they meet once. Morbius is told he's a genius child prodigy after a brief scene that doesn't really show that at all. Morbius wins a Nobel Prize but "disses" the organization, in an attempt to show what a brilliant dude Morbius is while maintaining scrappy underdog status. But we don't see the "diss" and we don't know why he did it either. We keep getting told things about characters that the movie never shows. It all feels like nonsense.

I can't quite put it into the words but something is way off about the acting, like two kids in a grownup trenchcoat off. The scenes with the two cops trying to catch up to the plot are embarrassing. The scenes with the "love interest" (out of the blue) are embarrassing. The stuff that should be fun is glossed over - Morbius catalogues and masters his powers instantly, the world feels weirdly claustrophobic (everything revolves around Morbius entirely, who in turn feels dettached from everyone), and the dialogue in general isn't as smart as it wants to be. I mean "deadly to bats, fatal to humans". jfc
