So we all know that the typical "game journalist" is a sham by now right? There are very few people in the game's journalist business who's opinions actually make sense and their reviews on games can actually be trusted. In fact there are very few people in the industry at all that aren't trying to be political activists instead of doing their actual job regarding playing games. It's a problem that stems from websites having staff and writers that clearly have no experience with gaming nor any desire to be involved with it. When you look at professionals in any industry the people that do the job well are people that first and foremost have a PASSION for it. Gordon Ramsey is an incredible passionate chef and thus has built an empire. John Madden was incredibly passionate about Football and thus was not only a great coach but a fantastic announcer.

IGN writers are idiots. The following video is from formal IGN writer Alanah Pierce who now currently works as a writer for Sony Santa Monica and does youtube videos in which she consistantly proves she knows nothing about how video games work.

You dont have to watch the video because I am about to rant about every stupid point she makes in regards to trying to defend IGN and other gaming sites for giving Star Wars Outlaws a 7/10 and why supposedly 7/10's are so commmon.

POINT 1 -
The start of the video rambles and tries to be funny. But 90 seconds in she illustrates that since she is formally an IGN writer and as such she's qualified to talk about this particular subject. And firstly the thing we must all remember is that a game review is "just some guy's opinion."

Well yes while that is true. I must point out that it is supposed to be the opinion of a "professional". While it is just an opinion, that opinion should be coming from someone who's whole job is playing games and talking about them, thus that person should be exceptionally qualified in order to inform consumers about the quality and fun of new games coming out. It's not "just some guy" it's a professional writer and video game player (in theory) letting an audience of people know what to expect from whatever game is being reviewed.

Alanah will make this point in the video way later, but Gordon Ramsey reviewing food isn't "just some guy" giving an opinion, it's an incredibly knowledgeable professional giving that opinion based on countless taste tests of countless different meals. And so should a video game reviewer's opinion be based on thousands of hours of gaming experience.

POINT 2 -
After explaining that a video game reviewer is "just some guy" she then explains that this person is only different because they get to play video games at work for work and thus play a lot more video games than the average person. Which means they are NOT "just some guy" they are a professional video game player/writer! The definition of professional is being paid to do a specific task, if someone pays you to do a thing you are a professional at that thing. Therefore your opinion is not "just some guy" it's coming from a wealth of experience.

POINT 3 -
Now Alanah explains the breakdown of the IGN rating scale and points out that a 5/10 is not "average" but instead mediocre and thus fairly bad. There are 1000's of games that get released everyday on Steam and these games are solo developed indie projects, shovelware, asset flips, and the bottom of the barrel and thus those are the games that deserve the 5 and below on the IGN scale. Triple A games can't be below a 7/10 because they are complex, have many gameplay systems, lots of songs in the soundtrack, they work and don't crash, (which ironically Star wars crashes and many of it's gameplay systems break throughout the game so.....). Basically the point is that so much shit gets released that a big AAA can't possibly be a 4/10 because there is no room there. Too many shitty games in the 4/10 category therefore we can't stick any AAA games down here.

As if to prove this point she then plays three games in the new releases category on steam. Of which she gives each game a couple of minutes and then just shrugs it off. The footage she shows of her playing these games is actually a really bad faith look, because she never seems like she's actually giving the games a shot but instead just dismissing them to prove a point.

And the crux of this whole thing is that she has no point. Star War Outlaws is a 7/10 because it's more complex that some random indie games? She implies that there would be too many games with shitty scores if they put actual numbers on games like Outlaws, but even that is a fucking bold lie because IGN doesn't review random indie games from the new releases list, therefore those lower numbers are never used on their chart. And even if there are a lot of 4/10's who cares if that's what the games deserve? None of her arguments make any sense to anyone with a fucking brain.

The bottom line is this, the reason why the 7/10 has become such a meme is because everyone KNOWS it's about access journalism. IGN can NOT give a major AAA game a shitty score because IGN needs to remain on publisher's good side in order to continue to get review copies, and thus continue to get early reviews up on the site for clicks. That is the simple truth to all of this, and no amount of pandering or dancing around with made up excuses that don't make any fucking sense will change the truth that we all know is behind the "mainstream" review sites.

That is why Youtubers and Twitch streamers have been the go to source for many people's questions as to whether a game is worth picking up or not. The fact that these sites are still floundering around after all of this time is amazing to me, and even more amazing that it could all be fixed by just having a few people who actually care and are willing to be honest about what the fuck they're playing.

Alanah isn't the only former IGN shill trying to protect mainstream gaming publications either. The Kinda Funny crew has said the same thing many times over the years since their split. But they also currently have to bow to the access journalism because they've propped themselves up on going to events, getting interviews, having developer guests, etc. And being too harsh causes that to go away.

Only by comparison. I 'm not exactly a fan of their bullshit and antics either. Depending on who or whom we are talking about.

A lot of gaming Youtube reviewers or Twtich streamers/whatever they call themselves aren't much better than the professional gaming journalist nowadays. They're either have their heads up their asses or when they get really popular, they start taking these weird stances, illogical takes, and dumb hills to die on. Or get upset at people making gaming choices they disagree with, even when nothing or no one is actually harmed. It's gotten to the point where they became no better or just as bad as the game journalists they wanted to avoid being and mocked. Especially when they start making things up, dig into intellectual dishonesty, and adding to discourse. Don't even get me started when they get called out or caught being an asshole. They'll either delete their twitter post(s), then gaslight their audience, or remove their YouTube video or set it to private.

Yes and no.

Someone might be so incredibly knowledgeable about something that their opinion actually becomes worthless to the average person. How often does the wrong movie or a movie that practically no one saw win an Oscar?

There's a big difference between the average gamer, the informed gamer, and professionals who are literally playing hundreds of games per year.

The majority of gamers are playing 5 games a year or less. These are the people who buy the new Madden or the new Call of Duty every year and don't look past that decision. This is what gaming is to them. They think that Call of Duty deserves game of the year every year. In the food analogy these are the people who never eat anything other than burgers, pizza, and chicken tenders.

The people on this website are informed gamers. We buy and play maybe 10s of games per year. Our tastes are different from the average gamer. We would scoff at the idea that Call of Duty deserves game of the year every year (or that it's even been good since CoD4). In food terms, we're the people who dine at fancy restaurants eating sushi and duck confit.

Professionals might have even more discerning tastes that us. They play so many games that they might be more interested in things that are extremely new and unique rather than just things that are executed well. A game might catch their eye for having a unique story element, or a unique game mechanic, or a unique character, which causes them to rate the game higher where others might not, maybe even to the point of overlooking other elements of the game that someone else might find more important (like game feel). Gordon Ramsey might rate a certain dish higher than me because he notices a particular rare ingredient in the dish being used in an interesting and unique way, whereas I might not have the pallet to discern that ingredient is even in the dish, or have no idea that ingredient exists at all.

The problem is, reviewers are writing game reviews for people who might be in the average gamer category, or the informed gamer category, and they might not actually know what those people want or how important certain elements are to those people. A unique story hook might be extremely important to the professional reviewer because they're bored of seeing the same story over and over, but completely irrelevant to someone who only plays 3 games a year because EVERY story hook is unique and interesting to those people.

Have you ever seen Gordon Ramsey make a grilled cheese sandwich? It's an abomination.

POINT 2 -

Not all reviewers are equally well versed in every genre of game, and neither is every gamer. If you asked me to review a racing sim I would be entirely unqualified to do it. A lot of reviewers don't get to pick what games they're asked to review. A game comes out, a particular person is available, and the game is dropped on their desk and they're told they have a week to play it and write it up. Maybe they can say "I'm not qualified to play this" and pass it on to someone else, but often they can't.

Thus for some genres reviewers can often only provide surface level feedback on mechanics or balance that might be of vital importance to hardcore players of that genre. For example very few reviewers are able to play character action games at a high level of skill. This is more of a budget and management issue with game review publications (not having enough staff versed in enough genres to have an expert in the genre review a game) but it's also one of the reasons that some game reviews feel so incorrect, or toothless.

I think the actual big issue with the 10 point or 100 point number system is that most game publications are in the US, and our brains have been molded by the US education system into seeing anything below a 7/10 or 70/100 as practically a failing score.

A 5 should be average, but in US schools a 7 is average. Because of this half of the 10 point scale doesn't get used. There's practically no distinction between a 1 and a 5 on the scale (all complete failures), and a 10 is also practically never used because very few things are perfect, so you're left with just 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 as actually useful numbers on the scale.

When you think of 7/10 as average then of course most games would get a 7/10.

The only scale that should be used for games is a 5 point scale.

1 - Broken mess of a game that's practically unplayable.
2 - Below average
3 - Average
4 - Above average
5 - Great

It's just Critical going on his usual tired spiel about games journalism. Not much new here, you haven't already heard before. It's the same old shit as last time.

Game journalist justifies so many AAA games getting 7/10's or better because there is no room on the grading scale for them for some arbitrary reason. Because a AAA game is more complex than an indie game it deserves a better score. Trying to obfuscate the idea of "access journalism" in which game sites keep AAA scores high so that they continue to get favorable treatment such as trips, swag, and early review copies.

I just don't care for scores. You should be able to read the opinions presented and decide if you wanna play something without a numeric indicator. If you can't then you likely can't appreciate the same things I do about the game anyways so you'd likely not even enjoy the game I give a high score anyways.

And anyone can review games, just because IGN hired you or whatever that doesn't mean anything. Anyone can go on youtube and make a video and if it catches on he's automatically valid.

Bro that's called "the neutered he", it's a genderless use of the term in pursuit of brevity. It implies all of the genders, even ones not yet invented.

And it's relevant today still.
And it's just as tiring and boring. Let the professionals rot in their own hell they created for themselves. I can't even stand Yahtzee much anymore, because he has become the status quo. Albeit slightly different, but not much better when you stop and think about it. Like I mentioned, most of the YouTubers and Twitch people aren't much better than the professionals or come with their negative bias and bullshit.

Then be more specific. Thank you for the context now.
