In Canada we are really confused by what is going on. There was this big lead up to the tariff war. Trump seemed so set on going that way and everyone was preparing ( I have clients who sell to the US and others who buy and all were scrambling). Then two days later, it is all suspended after Trump talked to the leaders of Canada and Mexico and they promised him to do exactly what they were already going to do. Did we win or is Trump simply going to use it as an excuse to invade Canada?

Asking the internet why all the things the internet told you are wrong now is unlikely to lead to a satisfying conclusion.

I don't really follow stories so close to when they happened because I like waiting for all the info to come out. I'm doubting Trump or Biden or DEI caused the crash, I'm guessing it's a bunch of people's faults.

My guess? Trump is hoping people won't realize that they are simply sticking to the promises they had already made and will be able to spin this as him convincing Canada/Mexico to bend to his whims.

I suspect this.

Alternatively, perhaps he expected them to roll over and agree to his demands, and when they didn't, had to find some demands that they would agree to so he looks like a winner.

I'd not be surprised if he tried again later, though, so keeping buying local would be my advice.

It is possible that there are things that could be cut at various departments without any reduction in their functionality. Seeing how the website formerly known as Twitter functioned after Musk took it over I don't trust any judgment call made on Musk's behalf in that regard.

While the actions he took (like disbanding the Aviation Security Advisory Committee, or offering payouts for staff to leave) were moronic and could arguably make things less safe in future, there's not really any credible link between those actions and the 29th Jan crash. There simply wasn't time for those actions to have affected the staff or training or anything else-- 8 days? 9?

The Aviation Security Advisory Commission was to advise the TSA, not Air Traffic Control. They don't impact things in the air, their advice was on what to do before people/cargo even get near the planes, and they certainly had no impact on a helicopter crashing into a plane. If you shuttered the TSA entirely, it would not increase the likelihood of the military crashing into you.

The offer for people to take the payout was the 28th, if it inspired controllers to ditch work, that could be a theoretical connection, though not one with any specific connecting evidence available.

Musk's already been going on about how there can be more than one account with the same SSN and when there are they can both be paying out at the same time. Which is how the system is designed in the first place - SSN is not unique, and for everyone born before like 2014 the first 5 digits basically spell out where you were born, and the last 4 were just assigned in order counting up. The combination of SSN and name is meant to be unique, but that has had occasional collisions as well because no one was really making sure of that for most of the history of Social Security.
