I feel that it depends on what the individual is looking for. Some players want an engaging stories, some players want deeply developed characters, and some just want good gameplay. Some want good combinations of several different things. Me? I'm happy to just fire up Dragon Quest III...

Freespace 2 had great AI for your squad members. They do what you tell them to do to the best of their abilities. They'll even shoot down bombs that are approaching your escort objective! Oh, and there's nothing like having them all converge on the same capital ship.

I don't remember this kind of fuss when Jack Baur was pulling a guy's nipples off after the guy killed Jack's girlfriend. Jack then proceeded to disembowel the guy to get the guy's swallowed SIM card. Also, there's a reason why this game is rated M.
