You have to play to get characters, profile levels, "runes," and "masteries," in LoL. In DotA, you don't have to do anything to play the entirety of the game, so I prefer DotA but you can try both if you wanted to as they are both free.

Yes I'm an asshole for saying it, but it could be an AoS (Aeon of Strife) or more commonly known as "DotA ripoff." Not saying that it is, just saying it's possible.
