It's a real shame my internet connection sucks so hard, otherwise I'd also subscribe to Xbox Live, unfortunately for me, I'll have to wait until I get a decent connection. Yeah, I definitly wanna venture deeply into the realms of XBL (and do a bunch of studies regarding griefing there as well.)...
It's sort of a shame, I wouldn't have minded writing down all the smack talk for my teacher to read. But it's not as if what I've got now (no smack talk, abuse, discrimination, etc.) is not relevant. If anything, it's more relevant, just because it disproves what a lot of other science papers...

Before Black Ops I've been playing the L4D series but in there hardly anyone ever talks. Most of communication is by text, which is sometimes hilarious. Thrash talking is so funny when you're on the opposite end. XD
Thanks for your comment! It doesn't bother me personally that much, mainly because I hardly encounter annoying behaviour in the games I regularly play. One of my classmates researches griefing in WoW and pretty much found what you describe. The contrast between that and Black Ops is striking...
I'm playing it on PC. I haven't run into hacks or modded servers so far, sooo all seems good.
@Tubez - thanks for mentioning that! It hadn't really occurred to me, so I'll make sure to use that as a possible factor in not seeing as much abuse as I had expected.
