Not all mario games play the same, it's why he can be used. Heck it's why he's still popular most diverse line up from a single gaming franchise I've ever seen and all of them are fun. Killzone and others like it? Pretty much the same even if decent.

Soulhackers is what you are looking for on the ps1 and 3ds. SMT 1 on the SNES as well. Persona is just an offshoot it's not even major in anyway aside from persona 2. Nocturne is one of the most important ones to play and it's on the ps2 Actually the entire SMT universe is connected.
