Final Fantasy has never been science-fiction. The more recent games are science-fantasy, because they're still so far removed from the real world.

There's a lot more to The Last of Us than just being depressing. The depressing parts work because the characters have other moods to compare sadness to and something to live for, and the game ends on a relatively hopeful note. Slavishly adhering to a depressing tone would mean a shallow...

The problem isn't so much that the overarching story doesn't have an end in sight, it's that it's not very interesting and distracts from the more engaging historical settings.
