Remember that not all kids fit the stereotype. In a young modern society if your different or want to act differently your peers will be totally unforgiving (they don't like people who want to be nice to other people). It's hard for kids not to conform to what the majoritiy of their age group...
It's peer pressure that is to blame. If a kid has friends who drink they feel that to be part of the group they have to drink as well (pretty sad I know). The same happens with fashion and mobiles. Also if parents protect their kids too much the child would probably feel that they should rebel...
