I've seen the movie Dune, and it reminded me a lot about the book and movie "2001 Space Oddyssey". Are the books alike because the movies seem to be.

This is sort of weird to me, but I finished reading the first book of the Eragon trilogy thinking that it was a pretty good novel. It was gripping and could possibly be as good as the Lord of The Rings books, yet everyone says that Eragon was horrible. Everywhere I look people say it was bland...
