I find that a lot of issues with pixel art looking 'bad' can also be fixed by lowering the display resolution without having to apply a CRT filter, or buy a CRT TV on Ebay and receive a box of packing peanuts. Maybe not to the same extent as the CRT but it's better than nothing.
