What have you done in a video game that you shouldn't have been able to?

Quake - Rocket Jumping wasn't something which was intended by the developers, but became a vital skill. Deus Ex - Using limpet mines to climb buildings. If I remember correctly, in Tokyo you could climb a building and an NPC was up there.

Dark Souls - I'm Prepared To Die (Again)

Ugh, those six giant skeletons... I had to wear the fog ring, and I smacked each and every one with a Zweihander (one shot for the win). Totally melee'd that tomb!

The Souls series does inventory management brilliantly by... (RPG discussion as well)

Not really. The Bandit can level up twice as soon as they reach Firelink and use it - which still only puts them at level 6 (which is what the Deprived class starts at). The Pyromancer needs 4 levels investing at Firelink - which only puts them at level 5 to be able to wield the Zweihander...

Poll: What's more important, higher resolution or anti-aliasing?

My monitor is a 16:10 (1920x1200) screen. Whilst playing Witcher 2 I knocked down the resolution to 1680x1050 (still 16:10) and added some FXAA. It ran much better than at 1920x1200 without AA, and looked just as good.

Looking for suggestions for a timesink game.

X3 (either Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude) are huge time sinks once you 'get into them'. Starting off can be slow but, by Christ, they can evolve into something you'll play for days without sleeping.

Your personal top 3 games you have ever played.

You've never heard Dark Souls being touted as a 3d Castlevania or 3d Metrodvania? My age allows me to take it a bit further to a 3d Kung Fu Master. Go through a level, learning enemies, learning their patterns and weaknesses. See a new enemy and get killed. Repeat the level and learn the new...

Your personal top 3 games you have ever played.

I was going to choose my personal top 3 according to the amount of time I've played them for...but I've spent loads of time on Skyrim - yet it doesn't rank as one of my favourites. Whilst the graphics in games of recent years are outstanding, I feel gameplay wise they leave a lot to be desired...

    Best Opening Sequences in Gaming

The Witcher 2's opening scene (mentioned earlier in the thread) is by far and away, without a shadow of a doubt, a million times better than most of the amateurish pap seen in other games. I've yet to see an intro come anywhere near it in terms of quality.

What is your Top 10 Games of all time?

I'm gonna try listing my top games by genre - I hate it when lists contain sequels to sequels in different slots. RPG: Baldur's Gate 2 Adventure: Grim Fandango FPS: Unreal Tournament 2k Driving: Need for Speed - Hot Pursuit Sports Sim: Football Manager 2008 Space Sim: X3...

    The importance of Manuals?

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating a return to physical manuals. I think most people will agree that the extra cost associated with printed manuals (media and boxing) was crippling for distributors. I'll take the super-low prices any day. However, I believe manuals have a part to play (in...

    The importance of Manuals?

Some good points regarding the in-game Tutorials. As a completionist with restartitis, I 'have' to play the tutorial levels each and every time I restart. Probably little wonder that I get bored with them quickly. The strategy games (of which I've tried and always failed to get into) are...

    The importance of Manuals?

For a while now, I've found myself struggling to 'connect' with games. I've bought many games (how can one not when the games are so cheap in sales), yet I find myself playing for 10 minutes and then hardly ever playing them again. I didn't have that problem in the past, so I've often...

    Commitment Issues

Back in the days of Baldurs Gate, a few in the community coined the phrase "Restartitis". As a fellow sufferer it means that I've never completed the main quest of Skyrim (despite playing the first dungeon about 50 times). I really enjoyed playing The Witcher 2 because I didn't have to...
