Tried "Gamification" in my classroom.(Check updated post 283 for User Group info, it's now ready)

Chief - Brian - this was an inspirational read. Keep it up.

    Your most embarrassing gaming blunders

I was playing City of Heroes as a scrapper, went after a 'buff/debuff tree' planted by a Devouring Earth opponent, ended up pulling another mob or two down on the team resulting is a team wipe out. In retrospect, the tree was far enough away from the mobs we were fighting that it wasn't...

    Am I a gamer anymore?

Good for you. Get that journalism degree. Re: Am I a gamer anymore? You're fine. [I want to say "You don't quit it, it quits you (when you die, your hands fall off, or something equally drastic changes)".] If you were swearing off all games forever, a) good luck with that, and b) maybe, maybe...

    129: Midgar is Burning

Loved this article, though I know little or nothing about AOL/FFRP, was a paper RPG man back then, if that. There are these grand, overarching themes, the leitmotif of life, the rise and fall of memes and norms. It all moves so much faster with technology filling the sails. I thought of PB...

What kind of NPC would you be?

Toss up between trainer and quest giver, probably end up doing both. "We might just prevail" means that we are locked in an eternal struggle, except in the occasional cut scene where someone wins something.

    Explain your profile picture.

I have a CoH character (regen/martial arts scrapper) named Apedroid Omega, and this picture of an ape/borg thing reminded me of him. I'm a bit of a gorilla for a professor. Oh, and yes, I know Aardwulf should not be spelled Ardwulf. Thanks.

What if zombies invaded a video game world?

So ... I interpret this question as 'if there were a video game world with real world rules/laws of physics except for the ones we would have to change to allow for a zombie attack, how would you handle the situation?' There is a helpful video from the folks at CommonCraft called "Zombies in...

    144: Bridges to the Middle

Congratulations on your marriage, Bryan Brown, and on having both athletic friends and geek friends. I suspect that from far enough outside these groups, the differentiations that seem so distinct to us are scarcely a blur. From high enough up and with all of time in sight, an all-star barbarian...

    Poll: Would true democracy work?

Plato described democracy as "mobocracy", remembering the example of the trial of Socrates, a guy who was voted out of his society (during a time Athens was an experiment in democracy) and wouldn't go, ended up being put to death (because he was stubborn, and they kept upping the ante). Sure, I...

144: Master Chief in Sneakers: Making Life Not Suck

"Life is crap" and "reality is broken" (from the ever awesome Jane McGonigal) are powerful and provocative statements, but I won't disagree. We integrate games into our lives for recreation because we enjoy them, and if the flow we experience can be carried over to interfaces, metaphors, or...

Study Finds Similarities Between Videogame Addiction, Asperger's

Sample seems too small, classification of "addiction" is somewhat questionable, and the link to Asperger's is very tenuous. People with this disorder, which has a neurological basis, tend to identify with machines, sometimes think of themselves as robots, and to have difficulty processing, for...

How Would You Make A Non-Violent But Fun Free-Roaming Game?

This is very doable. Even in 'violent' games, there are areas or tasks that require stealth or adherence to certain rules, or other skills -- such tasks could be strung together in a rich, interesting environment with an engaging backstory, the aesthetics of which are entirely negotiable. A...
