You could say that about reviews of almost anything though - why have book reviews when you can just go to a library and start reading a random book? Genre isn't an indication of quality, I don't generally have a preference in genre, but I still want to know if something is good or not...
I agree, definitely not blaming them if they feared there might be legal trouble at some stage down the line.
I would have thought that review content would have been covered by general free speech rules, i.e. It's the opinion of the reviewer, especially if they are reviewing a product freely...
I can totally understand that, publishers of any type can be a crazy bunch, especially when review scores are involved.

I emailed them a while back about writing them some anime reviews, as I've done them for another website before. I got an reply saying that the anime review section was 'on hiatus' - which seems kinda weird, seeing as I was offering to take it off hiatus by doing free reviews for them :/
