Depends how immersive the game is. Or atleast how much the surrounding area makes an impact to the game itself. Forexample if im playing Skyrim or Deus Ex, then I have no music on. But if im just playing Terraria, mount and blade or Shogun 2 then I'll pop on a thrash album :)

Mine was the original Half Life, played earlier games on the Atari ST eg. street fighter 2 and Cannon Fodder. But wasn't till Half Life that I really started playing games :)
