I'd say it's liking anime that will make one a nerd, while other things can also make one a nerd. It's possible that your mom is a nerd though and it's an issue of "the times" that stopped her from progressing down the path of poindexter-ism.

Some advice for touhou games in general; (you probably started with perfect cherry blossom, as it's recommended for beginners) don't play it on easy mode. Easy mode essentially sets you up to never improve which will make the game take longer and kill your enthusiasm for it.
