Not entirely. When we see them spelling "eight" as "eyght" then maybe I could accept that hypothesis but until then, it seems like sheer laziness to abandon the letter 'u' in such a fashion.

Irish isn't British. As a Northern Irish person, I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to this. Scottish people aren't happy with being called "British" either, but they don't have as much of an argument against it as Northern Irish people do or especially Republic of Ireland citizens...

Well I met a lot of people I'd now consider to be excellent friends through a gaming club, so I'd say while it didn't affect my social skills, it did open up additional opportunities for me to use them :)
