Atari Pres: Soon Gamers "Will Never Buy a Game in a Box"

Is this the same Atari president that was so desperate to embrace the future that he signed up to publish EVE Online in a box - a game that's been doing just fine for the last 5 years as a digital download :D

    162: Politics in a Vacuum

Very good article, but I think the second day was much more interesting and both sides of the process came together a lot more.

New game journalism, but not New Game Journalism

Maybe, but there's more to the argument than whether games 'journos' have been to university or not - which seems to be the most prominent bugbear in the article. Here's the truth: Games writers are paid peanuts. Most are in it 'for the love of it.' That's it. There really is no other argument...

New game journalism, but not New Game Journalism

The Buffa article was a relentless - and therefore boring - tirade of negativity, prompting the suggestion some PR bint had ticked him off that morning. Still, it was fairly-well written, which is clearly the most important thing to him (although it could easily have been half the length)...

    54: My Own Private Galaxy

That keeps happening to me in EVE too :) - Z

    54: Lost in the Void

There are all sorts of games that could have been mentioned, but I think the article is asking where the genre is heading - if anywhere. The answer is perhaps being provided by EVE. It needn't have been mentioned though since it bookends the magazine. The answer is therefore implied, imho. - Z

Sound off (Issue 54): Favorite Space Game

Starcraft, a space game?! I'd argue to the contrary, partly because I have an irrational hatred for Blizzard's games... actually, mostly. :) Me, I like Elite and EVE in roughly equal measure. But generally there are far too many space games I like to have to list them here. - Z

    54: Wing Leader

Y'know, as much as Wing Commander was the poster boy for space gaming, it was also a prelude to the genre's downfall - in a very real way. Those fast-moving bitmaps surely inspired Doom - for Id it was just a case of dumbing things down a bit, pouring on the blood, and, et voila, base gaming...

    54: Footprints in Moondust

I'd just like to say this was a fantastic article. I think I'll have to read Olaf Stapledon's 'The Star Maker' again. And maybe I should try Noctis again too. - Z

    54: Lost in the Void

Why mention EVE when the whole structure of the magazine leads up to EVE anyway? Whether it was implied or not, EVE is the pretty much the sole champion for the genre, and doing wery well because of it. - Z

    54: Development in a Vacuum

Magnus is a pretty hardcore player, moreso than a lot of CCP. He certainly knows his game a lot more than the marketing drones who pump words for the big players in the industry. - Z
