Like 2 of the 3 most recent Alfred's (nolanverse and Gotham) sound less like they worked as Butlers and more like they would crack your head in with a bike lock for accidentally knocking a steak and kidney pie out of their hand.
Arguably, that's more British than a genteel butler.

He's too old. He's nearly 50 (which is I think already above the mandatory retirement age for agents according to the novels) and they wouldn't get enough films out of him before he began to look too creased. No-one wants to go back the late Roger Moore era with a geriatric making out with 20-somethings.

They probably want someone 40 at the oldest, assuming three films minimum and a film every 3-4 years.
Would you believe I actually kind of forget how old he is? Because when I think of a man in his 50s, I sort of end up thinking of squat, silver haired smart arses like David Jason. Not tall, distinguished and dashing looking men like Elba.

But okay, too old - both from a character perspective and actor capability perspective - is an objection I can understand.

Isn't Daniel Craig 53 now? He's apparently done ok having a couple of movies under his belt.

He’s 53 now, sure and just wrapped up his tenure. But he was 38 when he made Casino Royale and there were longer than normal gaps between his movies. CR to QoS was two years, fairly normal but then it took four years before Skyfall came out, then three more for Spectre and depending on the version of accounting either four years again, or five years for No Time to Die.

I say let him retire from the role. He’s been at it for a decade at least.

I watch For Your Eyes Only about once a year, and amid all the really goofy Roger Moore Bond nonsense is this fantastic piece of acting (relevant line timestamped)

Bit of a spoiler I suppose, but after No Time to Die, Craig has definitively retired as Bond.

Edit: +1 for Elba being too old. And frankly, maybe a little too big. We just got muscular, sledgehammer over scalpel Bond with Craig. I wouldn't mind going back to a Bond who looks like he wasn't chiseled out of stone.

As for him being black, I refer to Trevor Noah's bit on that. You have to admit, in certain scenarios and settings, Bond being black would be a liability. But that would allow for some comedy, which I wouldn't mind at all.

I don't know about too old, Moore was 46 in his first Bond film and played him until he was 58.

Well I personally wouldn't want that to happen again. I realllly have my doubts people today would be okay with an old man Bond. Especially since that was pretty much Craig's Bond by the end, and he was still in his late 40s too. Elba will be in his early 50s by the time a new Bond will come out.

That said, Tom Cruise is turning fucking 60 this year. So if Elba is okay with invoking daemonic alien ghost powers to stay young and fit as well, more power to him 😛

And the reason he retired was that his love interest in A View To A Kill was played by Tanya Roberts. He was older than her mother. Yeah, he was way too old to be Bond at that point.

Here's a bit of missing the point for you in Seattle.
