How many days after milk's "best by" date are you willing to still drink it?

Agree with the others: smell and taste.

There is a short timeframe where it doesn't smell bad and doesn't have the "sting" of milk gone bad, but still taste "not good... something is up here". At that point you can still use the milk to boil it with kakao or make cereal and so on.

Also: I usually buy my milk for 30% off on the last day. (I do buy a LOT of things for 30% off these last few months)

Only did regret it with a steak once... MY GOD that stench...

Thinking about it, I don't recall ever having a jug of milk last until the "best used by" date. . . .

Used to go through 2-3 gallons a week between using it for cooking and just drinking it.

Tape over the expiration date when I buy it.

for real: a week is often pushing it, but a "longer lasting" milk can be fine for 2-3 weeks. I mean that it says "longer lasting" in the carton but the best by date is pretty much the same as regular milk.

Because then there is the processed milk with a much longer expiration period.
