Stuff like Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

I am a massive wuss, if I'm going to be trapped in a horror game, I want to be tooled up like Isaac Clark from Dead Space so at least I can fight back against the gibbering monster that wants to eat my skin.
More specific than my already stated general malaise with most games, Horror games. I like them well enough, but my anxiety doesn't allow me to enjoy playing them. The last one I tried was Outlast; I think I made it about a third of the way through when it just became too much. I'll watch playthroughs if one interests me enough, but I won't play them myself anymore.
Horror games in general that don't allow you to fight back or defend yourself in any type of way. I tend to avoid because it becomes annoying when you're just fighting regular, but deranged humans. The only exception is Clock Tower. You can at least have some temporary defenses or one time item uses that will get you out of a jam.

I understand if the character isn't skilled enough to use a gun effectively, but when you can't even kick a normal human being in the face in self-defense, it's just stupid.
Can you kick someone in the face? If so, I'm impressed, that's a lot of flexibility.

That's one of the reasons the RE2 remake worked so well for me. You are a trained cop (at least for Leon, haven't done Claire's story yet), but a rookie, so while you can handle a gun, it's not nearly at military training level, easily. Headshots? Yeah, those will work if you can pull it off, but I found kneecapping to be a much more viable option for me.

Shooting a gun is easier than effectively kicking someone in the face.

For me:

Anything Soulslike: I respect it has a niche but to me its self-flaggelation and I'm not interested.

Baldur's Gate III: I get enough stupid shit as a result of my own dice that I get to roll myself. I'm not interested in handing control of that over to an algorithm.

Civilian with some fire arms training she learned from her brother, Chris, but never shot anyone before RE2 happened.
So again, makes sense that she knows how to handle a gun, but isn't a marksman in terms of gameplay. Nice.

RE3R does of a reversal that screws this up. Jill and Carlos can't used self-defense items (even though Jill used them in RE1R just fine), even though the former has years of experience as a SWAT officer, and Carlos is a military mercenary. To balance the fact Jill has a dodge, and Carlos has a parry punch, but all Capcom had to do was make SD items less powerful or fewer in numbers. Thankfully, there are items you can unlock in RE3R's shop that can make dodging/parrying easier, but it still things and makes no sense for two characters with more experience than a rookie cop and a civilian with small weapons training.

Souls-likes as well, but for a different reason. I hate fail states. Dying in a game, frustrates me so much I usually have to put it down and come back later. A game like Dark Souls, where you are expected to just throw corpse after corpse of yourself at bosses until they choke on them... just don't appeal to me. Not that difficult games bother me, sometimes coming out of a big action sequence with no healing items left and down to single digits in hit points... those are moments that stand out as really great ones. Sometimes just as good, having to flee. It is one of the things that made Shadow of Mordor so good. Fight not going your way... don't know the weakness of the captain you are fighting and then another ambushes you and you have to hoof it with just enough health left stay alive. Really great moments. That would be my instinct in a Soulslike, and from everything I've seen about them... that's the wrong way to play.
I think that that's kind of a myth about souls games, something only perpetuated by people who never played them and dive in head-long and so on. What it's more like is that until you understand how to play and how you build and equip your char you die a bunch and then it clicks and you barely die any at all. It's super common in those games to beat the latter half of bosses with barely any deaths. Even in Sekiro which people think of as the hardest, there comes a point where you're just a ninja god and nothing can touch you basically and you need to fight the optional secret boss to get a good challenge again. Like there's legit videos of people who understand the system making 1-shotting compilations where they beat every boss in a single hit. I think someone made such a compilation while using a lvl 1 character too. These games are much more about knowledge and comprehension than just dying over and over.

And this sort of skill kinda transfers too, so once you get used to how to play one of these games, you'll do ok in most of em.

Red Dead Redemption 2 & GTAVI. GTA I got bored of after finishing IV, and RDR2 relies way too much on unneeded realism and too restricting freedom during story missions.

JRPGs

I hate the traditional fight mechanics, I just do. Honestly, often I don't like the characterisation and storytelling either, but...

I had a go - someone tried to get me into FF6/7 about 30 years ago and I just didn't like it. I can read about this game being amazing and that game being amazing and I am never going to play any of them. Initially I was interested in seeing what Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 was like, and then I saw it was JRPG style and nope, I'm out, I will never play it.

I never say never in that regard. Also, if I don't want to play them how could they be great?

In all seriousness though, having anime visuals - not Square Enix/Final Fantasy style, but straight-up anime - immediately puts me off. Also, at this point, anything with a whiff of Fromsoft. It started with me not giving a shit, but now I just actively groan whenever a new Fromsoft or Chinese/Korean knock-off gets revealed.

Me too. I think a certain problem I have with a lot of typical anime-style visuals is that they seem quite... infantile. Teen-centric, often cutesy-twee, stupid oversized floppy hair, etc.

Why do they have such stupid hair? YOU'RE ABOUT TO START A SWORDFIGHT GET YOUR HAIR OUT OF YOUR EYES YOU MORON.

They have to look crazy cool, sexy, and stylish! What were you expecting a military style, a buzz cut or shaved head in a fantasy RPG?!

I don't mind anime art style but it has to look unique or going for something different when it comes to these style of games. RPG or not.

I expect nothing.

Mostly, I just really, really hate those stupid, overblown hairstyles. All the "reasons" aren't serious, they're just excuses to express how much I hate those hairstyles.

I mean, take this dude, and he's merely anime-adjacent. Firstly, he just looks like a man who has such low personal care standards that he's not had his hair cut for three months: it's not even a style as such, it's just a slovenly mop. Secondly, he needs his perception stat reduced roughly equivalent to wearing a substantial helmet, because his own stupid hair is ruining his field of vision so much.

I am a live and let live kind of guy when it comes to most anime designs. I do have my limits, but I'm not gonna cry about every single design. Not trying to criticize, but all you're doing is looking for "realism". Your own choice and taste, of course. Though you're not gonna find it in a majority of these fantasy rpgs from Japan.

No, I'm not looking for realism. I've already explicitly said so when I said "the "reasons" aren't serious, they're just excuses to express how much I hate those hairstyles". I hate those hairstyles, and it's just amusing to make up any reason why they are shit.
