Oopsie-whoopsie. Move fast and break things, I guess
Ok, deleting everything I could see, but also the backups as well? I'd have said that requires an extra bit of human incompetence to let the AI play with those as well.

"The ‘confession’ ended with the agent admitting: “I decided to do it on my own to 'fix' the credential mismatch, when I should have asked you first or found a non-destructive solution. I violated every principle I was given

My emphasis. Bless, it's even telling us we can never trust it with important things.

Of course it violated principles. It thinks "principle" is a word that sits next to certain other words in sentences in statistical ways. A word is a symbol that represents a concept. We can understand those underlying concepts, but LLMs absolutely do not.

I'm not any kind of programmer or AI expert, but it seems to me that using "AI" for anything outside of a few narrow scope tasks is a bit like using a piece of computer software that's been written on the fly with no Q&A testing. You, the person using it, are the Q&A test, and that Q&A testing will never be done because the software is always being rewritten and updated as it is used. So yeah, better not trust it with anything that you're not ok with it fucking up royally.

Yes. I would definitely have everything critical backed-up somewhere independently where the AI absolutely cannot get at it. Or alternatively, make a copy of the operational system as an independent digital playground for the AI to mess with, and implement across to the operational system things that have been verified as safe and stable.

I had been led to believe that was best practice even before AI was a thing, to create backup copies of everything every so often, and then not allow them to be touched by anyone or anything. Whatever the problem is you need the backup for, you want that not to get at the backups as well, because obviously.

(And that as a result, the greater danger becomes things distorted your information without it being as obvious as wiping everything, in that it might only be found after you've no longer kept the backups prior to it).

God yes. Everyone who writes long and complex documents knows that every once in a while you create a new file to work on and dump the old one into storage. And if necessary copy the stored one into at least one other physical and or digitial location.

Well, they did have older backups elsewhere and used those. The backups the AI could delete were those that got updated in very short intervalls so this mess cost them all the recent entries only.

But that is not as catchy of a headline.

What a weird read. "We don't mind the data center, but we also don't want any of the consequences the data center will entail".
I guess they're lucky it'll likely never get built then, because what they want doesn't matter.

Aw, bless.

A man who was behind the times on his own field of evolution 30 years ago got himself an AI girlfriend and now wants to give us his insights on a field he knows nothing about.

One water connection had been installed without the utility's knowledge, and the other was not linked to the company's account and therefore wasn't being billed.
One resident said frustration with data centers boiled over after local officials told community members to scale back their water usage.
Tigert defended the utility's decision to not levy a fine. "They're our largest customer, and we have to be partners," she said. "It's called customer service."
Be a shame if there's not enough water pressure for firefighting efforts. I enjoyed the water puns tho.

What the fuck is the point of being a water utility company if you're not a monopoly free to gouge or impose fines on your customers whenever you like?

TLDR: the business is failing to turn a profit and the AI keeps fucking up inventory, which is what happens every time this has been attempted

I'm sure it'll pan out next time

Good lord...

The fact that she's seemingly on the inside as well makes it even more SMH worthy.
