I always suspected lolI think David Cage's (Quantic Dream's) games are great games. Yes, I'm the one.
Started with Indigo Prophecy; I loved it. I literally bought a PS3 and my first HD TV just so I could play Heavy Rain; I loved it. Beyond Two Souls? I Loved it. And the only reason I've not played Detroit: Become Human is because it's not on Xbox, but now that the PS4 is an older system I might be able to find on the cheap, don't put it past me to buy one just to play Detroit: Become Human.
I had even played FF7 first, and still liked 8 better when I got my hands on it. For me it was just timing. I was hitting a particularly busy time in life and had very little time to game. My run through 7 had taken hundreds of hours, and I didn't have that kind of time to commit. And I love 8 because it was so streamlined. To this day I can barrel through it in a few dozen hours. I do acknowledge that 7 is the superior game, but the grind gets me and I lose interest. But with 8, each new area gets you about 20 minutes of grind and then you are good to go. A much better pace. Before recently, I though Final Fantasy 8 was the coolest game ever. The most amazing RPG and story and graphics.
I don't how I ended up with a PlayStation and that game. I don't know why I never played a FF game before that and after until FF7 remake. I don't know why I was not aware of FF7 while the rest of the world was rocked by it. I just wasn't following gaming at the time and really wasn't playing games alone like I did as a kid or I do now. But somehow FF8 came into my life and did not let go.
I think this is a really interesting insight to reviewing. After all, a review is itself a creative endeavour, and so with it comes all sorts of similar issues about feedback, comparison to other work, reputation etc.My dumbest opinion is probably that despite my continuing efforts to change it, I actually do care what people think of my opinions enough that I hesitate to share any that may be disagreed with, and when I do a review on Letterboxd, I have to actively make myself not look at the average until right before I rate the movie, lest I start feeling less confident in my own feelings on the film be "right" if I'm too far off from the average in my thoughts on either side.
Hundreds of hours for FF7? It's not that long of a game, even my first playthrough when I was 13 took me less than 70. My playthrough last year was only 36 hours. I've never bothered with the superbosses though, maybe that's where the extra hundreds of hours of grind comes from.I had even played FF7 first, and still liked 8 better when I got my hands on it. Don't be too down yourself. Regardless of "popular/unpopular" response, your opinion is your own. And while i'm may disagree or agree, as long as come from the heart, that's all that matters to me.My dumbest opinion is probably that despite my continuing efforts to change it, I actually do care what people think of my opinions enough that I hesitate to share any that may be disagreed with, and when I do a review on Letterboxd, I have to actively make myself not look at the average until right before I rate the movie, lest I start feeling less confident in my own feelings on the film be "right" if I'm too far off from the average in my thoughts on either side.

Is that a dumb opinion? It's one of the most beloved games ever. You are far from the first person I've encountered who idolizes that game. And it's a good game so it makes sense for it to be one of those games that has its ardent fans.FF7 is the best game ever made.
