Whatever you get, find a way to buy Snow Crash by Neil Stevenson. He's both a brilliant writer, and a fantastic story teller. The story is of a cyberpunk distopian future, much like (visually) Blade Runner, and (conceptually) The Matrix. It has heavy punk punk themes, and a gritty dark sense of humor. :)

It's my all time favorite book, and I'm not alone in this opinion. Many friends that I know that have read it place it in their top 10. :)

We have Borders in America too. Double entandra anybody?

OT: Buy some novels, they actually are wonderfully entertaining and are more portable than a game system.

And I'm curious, why did you win the gift card? What special feat did you accomplish to be endowed with a monetary reward from your educational facility?
Really? I wasn't aware of that. But then again, nobody tells me nothin.
Ahhh just sport related prizes, one does prefer to be modest.

"You keep saying that word. I don't think it means what you think it means," -Inago Montoya. Joking aside, a double entendre is a double meaning. For instance, saying "I want to have you for lunch" could mean that you either are inviting somebody over to have lunch with you, or that you want to eat somebody.

To the OP:

Read Nineteen Eighty-Four. Don't say you will and then not read it. Its a huge influence on both academia and pop culture, and most people who have graduated high school have read it. Take these people's advice. Speaking of something that you might not have read in school, though, I would have to suggest Watchmen, and, if you're looking for a nice, not too challenging, yet still respectable series, check out the Star Wars: X-Wing novels.

Have you tried anything by Garth Nix? I enjoy The Seventh Tower series and Keys to the Kingdom series.

If you haven't bought it, "Rant" is a great book. Other than that, just walk around the isles until you find something that tickles your fancy. It's not that hard, just go into the store and look around.

Well I've done all of those things... 1984 must be something that just got missed out somewhere along the way. I'll be sure to pick it up.
Whats the deal with "Discworld"?
They're extremely funny, and very clever. Terry Pratchett manages to entertain us greatly, while still teaching us a lot of things about our own world. The Discworld is actually pretty close to our own world - everything has just been fantasized. The cops work like regular tv-cops, and have shotguns, surveilance equipment, etc. People have cameras and coffeebrewers, talk about foreign workers, there are an analogy to nuclear war, people discover rock'n'roll, etc. And all the while Pratchett shows us these things, and usually shows the absurdities of alot of subjects that feature in our contemporary world, you'll be laughing hard because the man's so outrageously funny.

Just don't start with the three first. A few personal favourites are Soul Music, Masquerade, Moving Pictures, Going Postal, Making Money(which is a sequel to Going Postal), and Night watch.

Don't do movies unless they're in the super bargin bin (Borders tend to jack the price up on movies to a criminal degree) Best bet are books.
Let's see...books I think every good gamer/nerd should have in their library....

Complete Works of Shakespeare
The Belgariad by David Eddings
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy + The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien
The Watchmen by Alan Moore
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame Smith (but read the original Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen first!)
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Prelude and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman (first book of the Sandman series)
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess (make sure its the copy with 21 chapters; it should be since the original omission was in 1986)
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Unfortunately this has created quite a dilemma. The store in which it is valid - Borders (Sells books, movies and music for those outside of Australia) - does not sell games and therefore I actually have to make a decision on what I'm going to buy.

So if you had a $100 gift card and could only spend it on books, movies and music; what would you purchase?
Mystery Science Theater 3000. Though I already have every set and single (except Beginning of the End....gahhhh) dvd.

Pick up "Arrested Development" and I'll be here when you thank me.

I'm recommend The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, it's an awsome zombie apocolypes comic that has good old clasic zombies (slow moviing, can only be killed by destroying the brain). The plot is good and the people were just ordinary people thrust into an extodinary situation.

If comics are not your thing than I reccomend the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy series created by the great Douglas Adams. Its a whimsical science fiction comedy that will leave you smiling and wanting more.

It's a ridiculous waste of money to buy movies or music at a bookstore considering they're much cheaper elsewhere, so I suggest you buy a few books and increase your intelligence stat. Every fiction gives you +2 intelligence, and every non-fiction gets you a +5 increase.

No...
It can't be.
I couldn't get through that book when I was supposed to for school and I doubt anything has changed.

Sell it or trade it for a $100 giftcard to Barnes & Noble.
Yes I have a problem, and yes I'm an elitist about bookstores.

Then I'd buy the leatherbound gold-leaf editions they sell of classics. Thus far have Shakespeare's entire works, Poe's entire works, as well as the Divine Comedy.
[/spoiler]

I really want more! :O

I would purchase books. Spend a couple days on amazon. Find books you like and then look at the "people who bought this also bought that" section to see other stuff you might like. make a big list and start a personal library.

If you're not much of a book person go look at the comic book TPB (trade paperback) section. If a comic makes it to TPB it's usually good & worth reading. You could blow $100 on 10 of those easy. Plus you can sell them when you're done reading them.

The movie sucks balls compared to the comic
Do they sell the comic there? Probably not.
Do they sell the move there? Probably so.
