3.5 Million Copies of Mass Effect 3 Have Invaded Earth

EA has revealed some interesting launch numbers for BioWare's latest, as well as how many gamers shelled out for its day-one DLC.

In celebration of a successful launch, EA has revealed that 3.5 million copies of Mass Effect 3 have been shipped worldwide, while nearly 900,000 were sold in the North America on day one. Speaking of day one, EA also revealed that 40% of gamers picked up the game's increasingly controversial [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116234-Day-One-DLC-Files-Appear-on-Mass-Effect-3-Discs] launch DLC, From Ashes, meaning that regardless of various online rage vents, a ton of people still forked out for the content. One might even say that offering the early bonus mission was ... wait for it ... Massively Effective.

As part of its announcement, the company also boasted its over thirty perfect review scores, with the Xbox 360 version earning an average rating of 9.5/10.

"We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3," said BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka. "The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made."

While not all of those 3.5 million discs represent sales yet, EA wouldn't have shipped them if it didn't expect to sell them. If you consider that this number is only indicative of very early figures, and that it fails to account for any digital sales through Origin and other online retailers, I think it's a safe bet to guess Mass Effect 3 is pretty popular right about now. It seems as though those user reviews on Metacritic [http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/mass-effect-3/user-reviews] aren't very indicative of the gaming community's actual interest after all. Huh.

and 30,000 of those were people who were "Boycotting" the game.

Not really a surprise that ME3 high the roof like that though.

I am glad to say I am not part of the 40%. I am not boycotting the game. Oh no, of course not. If you want them to know that what they are doing is wrong you must show them how many people will purchase the game without the DLC... which, as it turns out, failed miserably. I have no faith in consumers.

Rage in 3...2...1...
Not rage so much as curiosity as to when we'll see EA/Bioware post the number of millennia (could have sworn that's how you spell the plural for Millennium...) gamers have spent playing the ME3 multiplayer (and the number of years players have spent on the campaign too I guess since I think they may have included it somewhere on one of the discs). I'm still grabbing a copy of this...and probably the single-player DLC too if I wanna be perfectly honest...but I'm waiting until I can get it used from an independent retailer. Well, at least my boycott/protest of Arkham City is still going well for all the good that did.

YAY!

That should help keep the Multiplayer going for a bit.
I can't wait to see the Origin numbers.

Yeah, that's what I'm more interested in as well.

I still have chosen not to buy the game because I will not be strongarmed into using Origin.

It's really sad too. I loved ME1 and ME2, and I am sure that this game is pretty good. But... unlike alot of people, I actually value my own principles and keep to them. It sucks how "boycott" has become such a dirty and meaningless word in the gaming community.

On the '40% of people bought the DLC' aspect, I do have to wonder if that includes people who got it as part of the CE as well. But either way, it sounds like another case of what's sadly normal for gamers. We're fine with bitching about something, but many refuse to actually go without it to prove their point. Instead they'll either buy it and keep complaining or find illegal ways of getting it and say they're 'sticking it to the man' when that just leads to companies imposing stronger DRM that hurts everyone.

Of course, I managed to get the CE for 360 happily enough. So unless I sell the DLC (quite probable as some people are paying $40+ for it alone), I'll be getting it anyways. And I completely understand people not getting it for PC due to Origin. I had considered buying the first two, but decided against it since I'd have to complete the series on Origin and for some reason the PC version doesn't have native controller support for 360 wired.

I only didn't like the ending, the rest of the game was spectacular. It really depressed me, I can't play that game again.

I am proud to say I brought on day 1 and got the "evil" DLC and I am enjoying the game.

Also you do know know that a origin free version is impossible on the pc unless pirated, also origin is not evil.

Good.

I haven't stopped playing it since yesterday, it's absolutely brilliant.

Even if the end is rumoured to be disappointing, It will still be one of my favourite game franchises of all time.

The Dark Tower series didn't end very well either, the journey to the end is still brilliant though.

This is sad because EA will probably push Bioware even harder with those sales figures. The game felt so rushed, with only 2 types of side missions overhear conversation-scan-launch probe-done, and play on this multiplayer map for a short time, the sub-par animations and story (not to mention the horrendous ending that gives lovers of the entire series the middle finger), and the near-complete lack of character interaction (only about 1-2 per person times when you talk to a crew member where you have a conversation wheel and can do investigate to learn more about various things). I'm a very tolerant gamer as well, not minding Dragon Age 2's ending very much and loving the game itself, though not as much as DA:O and DA:O:A. This was bad, and I honestly was enjoying the hell out of the game. I would have (and was) overlooked most of the issues the issues if not for the fact that no matter what ending you get, it's a giant middle finger if you had spent hours playing through the games in the series since the beginning preparing for this game.

Bought it, no real intent on getting day one dlc, but the ending man it went from game of the year to depressingly bad real fast. All in all glad I got it, wish they spent more time on the ending though.

I'm just taking a break from playing ME3 and so far, I love it. Sure it got some minor problems but I never expected it to be perfect. It's really a great game and although it's still early, it's a candidate for goty, at least for me.

If EA handled this IP a little bit more smartly, it would have been an even bigger success. Scary, huh?

So you know how I wasn't going to buy Mass Effect 3? [sub]If you do, stop stalking me.[/sub]

Well I ended up with two copies. Seems Amazon forgot to cancel my order when I... well, cancelled it, and I got it in the post, along with another copy of the game my friend bought for me.

And the DLC? I haven't bought it. But, I do have about 1700 Marketplace points going to waste, having sat inactive for months, if not years. It's quite the dilemma.
