Neo Geo X Handheld Confirmed, Arrives Later This Year

That rumored handheld device that legally plays classic Neo Geo games? It's for real, and it's coming soon.

Those of you who follow our coverage religiously may recall an article from January of this year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115493-SNK-Playmore-Plots-Portable-Neo-Geo-Resurrection] detailing a then-rumored handheld machine endorsed by SNK Playmore that would play classic Neo Geo arcade titles. Well, according to a new report by MCV, the handheld is real.

To wit:

Video game accessories and retro console specialist Blaze has struck a deal with Japan's SNK Playmore and US distributor Tommo to bring the NeoGeo X handheld console to market.

It will come with 20 licensed games built-in, such as Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters '94. The NeoGeo X will also feature an SD card slot, a 3.5-inch LCD screen, A/V output, internal stereo speakers and a headphone socket.

That's great news for anyone who grew up wishing he or she could afford the outrageously priced Neo Geo console. The bad news however, is that this handheld is no less outrageously priced.

MCV understands the console will be released in limited edition form and could be priced up to £500.

At current exchange rates, that figure translates to $783 US dollars -- a premium that seems dictated almost entirely by the fact that this so-called "Neo Geo X" will be produced in limited quantities. Unless it recently became prohibitively expensive to license twenty-year-old, emulated games, but that makes no sense.

So Neo Geo fans, are you still psyched for this machine? Or has the huge cash outlay turned you off from picking one of these things up when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2012?

Still want one, but seriously? Nearly 800 dollars for a handheld is obscene.

Huh, this looked interesting but there's no way in Hell that I'm gonna spend £500 on what is pretty much just a Neo Geo emulator. When I first heard about it I expected it to be no more than £100, but this is just insane!

I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of Neo Geo games on the PlayStation Store so I might just check those out.

I was really looking forward to that. Maybe the hardware was worth that much back in the day, but there's no way that it's that expensive now. Big fat pass.

£500...

Nope, why pay that much for a handheld when you can get all those Neo Geo games on a PSP for a much lower price.

can't i just take a used psp, tear out all of the sony controlled components, and put whatever i want on it?

i mean, speaking hypothetically, i'm pretty much indifferent on the matter altogether

Wow, that's more than the PS3 was, ON LAUNCH!

I can't see any justifications why it should be priced like that, especially when you can pick up a Mega drive handheld for £30.

Or hell, you could even pick up a actual boxed Neo-Geo AES (or Neo-Geo CD/CD-Z), with a couple of games for that price. I believe a boxed AES goes for around the £200- £300 mark. The games can be expensive though, but it's a much cheaper, and much better way of playing Neo-Geo games, than this overpriced handheld.

I was a massive NeoGeo lover... though I never had one. They had the absolute best games. Now I'm an adult and could afford a NeoGeo as I have a job, make money and understand saving money. All that said.... Hell NO! That is just stupidly ridiculous. I'll stick to emulators I guess. Darn shame really, I'm sure all the best games are there.

As an aside.... why in the world do they keep packaging King of the Fighers '94? We are gonna be at the 20 year mark soon enough. Just stop with it. They were iterations of it all up through last year. I would think King of the fighers '95 or '99 would be better choices since they were on the NeoGeo and they offered a significantly better experience than '94 did.

So it looks like I've either have to go without a NeoGeo X or, start robbing people to be able to afford one...That's too bad too, I was really excited for the thing. On the plus side, there are still a few compilation DVDs on the PS2 and whatnot that I can grab so there's that.

I think there was a much cheaper one made by a British company. I can't really remember too well. All I can remember is that Stuart Ashen reviewed one, and commented that the controller was really good...
