Capcom's Ice Bugs Return For Lost Planet 3

Inevitably, Capcom has announced a new game in its Lost Planet series, and we've got the details to prove it.

The House That Mega Man Built (before he was casually discarded to the hilarious dismay of overly excitable fans) recently held its annual Captivate media showcase in Rome, and the biggest announcement to emerge from that event was the unveiling of Lost Planet 3.

That trailer you see at top is the first official look at the game, and despite being entirely in Italian, is a pretty solid primer for what to expect. Namely, frigid conditions and biologically improbably insect analogues.

That should come as no surprise to fans of the series (snow and stupid-huge bugs are the series' two major hallmarks), but the story here is all new. Lost Planet 3 focuses on a rugged (yet apparently self-sacrificing) rig pilot who travels to the frosty climes of E.D.N. III to work for Neo-Venus Construction. Given the planet's inhospitable climate, this is dangerous work and Jim (that's his surprisingly boring name) hopes to use the gig's lucrative pay to support his family.

Unfortunately, the company's Thermal Energy reserves run low, prompting Jim to set out in search of more (or, more specifically, in search of a large enough cache to earn a hefty paycheck and an early ticket home). Even more unfortunately, there are a ton of the aforementioned stupid-huge bugs standing between Jim and his windfall. And, if I know anything about Capcom, there will also likely be a few shady humans bent on making his life more difficult. That's just how this sort of thing works.

While we don't know much about Lost Planet 3's gameplay (beyond the requisite "there will be both singleplayer and online multiplayer modes," and that it's been described as an open-world prequel of sorts), we do know that it is being developed by Spark Unlimited, a relatively unknown studio most famous for its work on Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Whether this instills confidence or anxious confusion is entirely up to you, though I do give the firm credit for crafting a solid debut trailer.

Lost Planet 3 is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC platforms at some as-yet-undetermined date in 2013. Expect increasingly large info dumps from Capcom as that deadline approaches.

Capcom give yet another franchise to a Western dev. I guess it happened before the Operation Racoon City fiasco at hand.

But aren't I right in saying Spark Unlimited's other games (Turning Point, Legendary) weren't very well received? I won't be expecting much from this game. Not that previous instalments set the world on fire.

This IS news, Lost Planet had FANS?
The second one was pretty enjoyable.

However, they've said they felt this was too "Monster-hunter-like".

So, third will likely be quite different.

Don't think I like the sound of that myself.

But, we'll see what comes.

Wow... that Italian in the trailer sure sounds like English...
Haha. Good call. Editing mistakes crop up more frequently before I've had my daily dose of concentrated caffeine. I'll just change that now.

I hope it's good, but the developer makes me skeptical. D:

Loved the 2nd one, never did beat the 1st but I did enjoy it... I need to go back and beat it.

I'm excited. Mostly because I'm a sucker for lost planet and giant bugs in general. KILL 'EM ALL!

Three words: Caffeine IV drip.

And don't worry, I can't tell Italian from Swedish, and those subtitles do not make it any easier...

I like giant bugs and multiplayer coop that LP2 had so I'm all for this :)
still a CoD studio handling it will probably make an average game horrible, well at least it won't be Slant Six

Aw, man. And here I was hoping I'd gained the gift of tongues.

Either way, I'm happy to see this. I had fun with LP1, and LP2 was a bit underwhelming, being from that era when multiplayer had to suck some of the life out of singleplayer to exist. Hopefully this won't disappoint. It's already moving in a nice direction with the character/mech designs. I was never a huge fan of all the hilariously-awkward armor configurations from the previous games.

Um...I played Finest Hour, thought it was really bad. That's not a good sign. I was also never a fan of the "run out of thermal energy and die" gameplay; just seems like playing one of those underwater levels in the early sonic games except its the whole game, and those tended to be the worst ones. They might not include that, but considering the plot it's more likely they will.

Um, Spark Unlimited?

Is this under the same notion that Capcom is trying to educate various western developers on how to make better games? Because so far its failed with Saint Six, and im still not omptimistic for Ninja Theory.

Other than that, ill keep an eye out for more info in case this finally makes me buy into the series.

Why the hell is there a Lost Planet 3? Also, what's with CAPCOM (and other Japanese devs like Square and KONAMI) giving franchises over to mediocre Western devs like NT, Slant Six, and Spark Unlimited? The only one that got it right was Blue Castle with Dead Rising 2. If I didn't know any better I'd swear that hack Inafune was still at the company

Thoughts:

LP2 was the superior one.

* Make the achievements much easier (AKA 'hardest to get of the year' is too hard, make it require no more than 30 hours work), instead of making the whole RPG aspect of the game grind-happy.
* Fix the atrocious latency, I hate playing with laggy Americans who say my internet is slow when they're only on 8Mb/s
* If I splitscreen on 1 console, actually allow me to go online, this was the most bizarre feature.
* Make all difficulty levels count for the achievements on that note, there's no reason to make it harder, and some people only play these games for them (I played through twice, some MP, then was done, if the achievements were only 5 or so hours away I'd go for them).

Bring on the glory again, the 2nd game was crazy fun, grabbing mechs off your friends, grappling all over the place, grabbing the bigger mech and killing people (except on MP, horrible lag that jumped all over the place and it was the worst I've EVER seen in a game, which is quite a feat).

But the thermal energy is your health so its just like every other game with a health bar.

I just hope that they do not fuck up the multiplayer (as they did with LP2)
(Retail copies was only able to play with retail copies, and steam bought could only play with steam copies which pretty much killed the multiplayer on pc)
