THQ Sees Hope in Fourth Quarter Results

THQ says its preliminary fourth-quarter financial results are stronger than expected.

The beleaguered THQ is far from out of the woods yet but the "preliminary, unaudited" financial report for its fourth fiscal quarter is a little ray of hope that perhaps things are starting to look up. The company said that non-GAAP net sales for the quarter are expected to be in the range of $160 to $170 million, well above the previous non-GAAP outlook of $130 to $150 million, driven by continued strong sales of UFC Undisputed 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Saints-Row-The-Third-Xbox-360/dp/B004QEV0MI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334760198&sr=8-1].

The relatively strong results plus "earlier-than-anticipated cash receipts" - which as far as I can tell is accountant-speak for getting paid without having to break any arms - means the publisher expects to report roughly $76 million in cash and cash equivalents for the end of the year, triple the amount it had originally forecast.

It's worth bearing in mind, before we get too excited about the dawn of a new day, that this isn't so much good news as it is merely less-bad. THQ will still report a non-GAAP net loss per share, but in the range of $.10 to $.20, rather than $.35 to $.50 as previously expected. It's definitely an improvement, but THQ is still in the tank. Furthermore, the situation appears to be improved almost solely thanks to the success of Saints Row: The Third, which reflects the common complaint that THQ is a one-trick pony. Saints Row is its biggest gun - and in the grand scheme of things, it's not all that terribly big - but beyond that, there's just not a whole lot else in the arsenal.

Still, the news is about as good as it gets for THQ right now and the company's share price reflected the improved situation, opening today at $.65, a jump of nearly 50 percent over yesterday's closing price of $.45. That's still a long way from the minimum $1 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115591-THQ-Faces-NASDAQ-Delisting] demanded by NASDAQ, but if THQ can stick in that range for awhile, it might be enough to dodge the delisting bullet. THQ will report its full GAAP and non-GAAP fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2012 financial results on May 15.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I'm sorely tempted to buy a couple hundred shares of thq and hope they recover back to $35 a share, unfortunately I'm also lazy.

I've been thinking the same thing since this whole thing started. Even if they go from there current value to over a dollar(which really wouldn't be too hard) one could pull in a huge profit.

But then I look at their lineup and just see a couple games that will probably be good and then a bunch of meh.

I don't know, darksides 2 looks pretty awesome and the 40k mmo going single player with a multi focus (whatever that means) could be really good, its a good idea to dump the monthly cost so it doesn't have to compete and loose against wow.

Can we knock off the damn captcha bullshit? I swear I'm getting them every other damn post.

As I said there will be some games that will probably be good, but the rest just meh. I'll probably see Darksiders 2 does. If it gives them a boost maybe invest. Metro 2033 - Last Light is supposed to come out this year too.

I hope so, I loved me some metro 2033. Really I only felt that it could have used a bit more time taken to smooth out the feeling of the game play.

I'm glad to hear this. They had quite a schism of poor judgement for a bit, but the future looks bright, IMO. I'm looking forward to Darksiders 2, Metro: Last Light, and also the Warhammer 40K MP RPG. Time to invest baby, haha.

You are not alone

OT: I like THQ, but they really need to make games that aren't just ripoffs of other companies' franchises

I'm still praying for a Thousand Son playable character, with decent psyker abilities.

The more games I think of from THQ the more I realise I reallllllly like the company. Darksiders, Saints Row, any WH40k to name the main three properties.

Call me selfish, hapless hopeful, or maybe a bit daft, but I'm hoping for, perhaps, a sequel to Homefront.

I know, I know, but I'm under the belief that, if you got more competent writers and a cleaner, perhaps more Battlefield-esque Multiplayer under its belt, it would be a pretty good competitor with CoD and Battlefield. All things considered, I honestly thought it was the FPS with the most potential in, at the very least, telling a fairly unique (at least given most FPS titles nowadays) story, and while it really, really tanked in that regard, here's hoping that maybe they get someone competent to write the story for a possible sequel.

You can make it out THQ, the Emperor demands it! We need our Dawn of War 3!
