Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter Has a Happy Ending

Leisure Suit Larry is coming again!

Based on the tiny slice of anecdote represented by forum feedback [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.361587-Leisure-Suit-Larry-Tries-His-Luck-on-Kickstarter], it seems like a lot of folks weren't all that terribly interested in a return of Leisure Suit Larry, even if it was accompanied by the inestimable Al Lowe, the man who thought the whole thing up in the first place. A few people were actually flat-out against the idea; one of our users summed a surprisingly popular view by calling the game a "sleazy piece of nonsense" that was "tacky, sexist and nasty" even when it was new.

Well tough noogies to all of you, because it's happening [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1451923705/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again]! More than 14,000 people ponied up a grand total of $655,182, well over the goal of $500,000. With Paypal funding added to the mix, the final, bottom-line total becomes $674,232.

That's a lot of money for a second remake of a 25-year-old game, but in his "thank you" video, Sierra veteran Josh Mandel expressed hope that the success of this Kickstarter will signal a wider resurgence of Sierra IPs and the adventure genre in general. With the Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter completed, Mandel encouraged donators to throw their support behind Jane Jensen's Pinkerton Road [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg] Kickstarter and, when it happens, the Two Guys From Andromeda, who are getting back together for another Space Quest game.

"This is all sending a message to the big publishers saying, we want adventure games, we want our Sierra back, we want our characters back, we want our designers back," he said. "We want to see a resurgence of Sierra, and we want to see it this year."

Jensen's Kickstarter seems to be doing well, roughly $35,000 short of its goal with 15 days remaining, and I would expect, and certainly hope, that a Space Quest Kickstarter would be at least as popular as LSL. But even if both of those efforts fail, we'll always have Laffer. The Replay-made remake of Leisure Suit Larry is expected to be out later this year.

On a positive note, at least the people who paid for its development actually want a LSL game rather than attempting to bring back an old IP is a desperate attempt to hit a profit.

Never cared about LSL. I think this is a good thing, though.

The real interesting thing to see will be one year down the line how this all shakes out, with all those Kickstarter games.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I enjoyed LSL, I was annoyed when the newer ones were just shit, but I still really want to see a new quest for glory.

lol

It'd be almost worth the low content post warning because that's all I can say to the idea that over six hundred grand can be raised on kickstarter in the name of Leisure Suit Larry.

I'm not saying they're bad games it's just... it's Leisure Suit Larry.

That said, if it erases from existence all memory of Box Office Bust then it's worth every penny.

[sub]right, think that's enough words now[/sub]

Yes! A REAL Quest for Glory remake. And to be honest, I'd it rather be more of a reboot than a remake. I've played those games so much throughout my ENTIRE life that I love em, but I want something new from that world.

Plus, there were the fan made remakes... but they just aren't the same. You know???

Id be happy if they just kept the story going, for the most part the games still hold up, they are buggy but still fun, although a gog port would be nice so they would work better on modern OSs.

I happily contributed to this, am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to throw money at The Two Guys From Andromeda, and dream about someone announcing Quest for Glory. I'd take "we put it up on GoG" (although GoG doesn't seem to get the VGA remakes of the first games from what I've seen) or "we're making a new one" or "we're now allowing people to lick one of the notebooks that this game was designed in".

My captcha was a picture of some keys and a request that I describe the brand? The hell?

Oh wow, I can't wait to see this get controversial in the media. Oh well, at least we'll get endless innuendo comments about it.

I think a lot of people who don't like Leisure Suit Larry feel that way because the only exposure they've had from the series is the latest two games in the series; Box Office Bust and Magna Cum Laude.

You have to go back at least 16 years before you'll find a game that Al Lowe worked on.

You know, LSL1 had a better ending then ME3, a better central character then FF13, and was published by a less disgusting company then EA. I bought the original, on FLOPPY DISK. 100 points to anyone here that remembers how much data fit on a 3.5in floppy.

I know its LSL, but can we please do without the juvenile humor?
that's like watching ren and stimpty while expecting a deep involving story that will make you think/move you.
Depending on how many bowls I've done, I can get pretty metaphysical and deep about Ren and Stimpy.
