Escapist Expo Looking for Volunteers

Help us make our first Expo a success by being a part of it.

No good convention can be successful without some help from the community that supports it, and the same goes for our upcoming Escapist Expo in Durham, NC, September 14 - 16. We need all sorts of people to aid us with guiding attendees, preparing for panels, and just generally helping folks have a fantastic time. So, if you'd like join our volunteer staff for the event, we'd love to have you!

We, of course, want to make sure that everyone applying to be a volunteer actually plans on attending the Expo, so in order to submit your application, we ask that you first register for the days you wish to attend. If selected as a volunteer, you'll then be able to either transfer that paid pass to a friend, or simply receive a refund for the entry free.

In order to apply, we'll just need some basic contact info, and your answers to a short questionnaire regarding your personal skills and interests. If selected, you'll be responsible for at least three-hour shifts each day you attend as a volunteer. For more information, and the link to get started, you can visit our volunteer registration page. I've been considering this since Susan mentioned it to me a few months back. I'll have to check my availability before I commit, but I definitely want to do it.

Sounds tempting, especially if there are some responsibilities that doesn't require huge language knowledge.
While I can speak in english on decent level, it might not be enough to actually help people.
I'll need to think about it...

I already applied a while back. As I've said before I'm especially adept at watching other people work.

Seems a bit strange that they want you to pay first. Looks more like a marketing scheme to bolster numbers, I mean, you could be happy/qualified to volunteer but not be able to afford the ticket price. Then you have the issue with paying but not being selected.

Not a scheme at all - this is standard for pretty much all cons. Plenty of people are happy to "volunteer" in order to get in for free, then they scarper off as soon as there's actual work to be done. By asking people to register, we ensure that the folks willing to volunteer actually do want to come to the show, whether they get in for free or not.

Hmm...well, you write pretty darn well, so if you can speak as well as you write, I think you should be just fine. But you'd need to be able to give directions, for example.

That doesn't apply here does it? Like, after paying for the pass, we give it to someone else? And if someone makes staff they still need to pay their way out there and hotel right?

Are you taking international applications?

Also, I went to the site to register but it asked me to go though the pass registration again, but I have one already.
Isn't there an account thing that I'm missing?

Bed and board aren't included I take it as I'm still looking for a hotel.

I'd volunteer in a heartbeat if you could get me the time off work and pay for the flight to get me there and back. Kind of defeats the point though right.

I would love to volunteer for maybe 1 or 2 days. Question is do you have a parking lot I can sleep in? (I really don't want to drive back and forth from Charlotte for two days.)

You send me a pass, tickets to get there and back (either by plane or train), and a hotel room, I'll be glad to help.

Otherwise, sorry, can't get there, hope to see you at NYCC (please show up this year!).

I'm very tempted to, since I'll probably be there all 3 days

Will you be allowed to be in cosplay/costumes on duty?
