Been loving this game ever since I got it back in the Alpha. The sense of humour is really witty and battles are actually pretty intense online, as you get to know player styles.

I've played a bit, and while it IS kind of nice...

Well, it's STILL no Galactic Civilizations 2.

I bought the game on steam a few weeks ago as well, and I was actually looking for a bit of modern Galactic Civilization 2 replacement.

It was fun, but I still feel that Gal Civ 2 has more to do, overal.

So it sounds like it's a pretty in-depth game in most areas, then combat is basically Gratuitous Space Battles-esque with a couple of mid-battle commands?

Hm. I dunno, GSB battles were painful to watch. :|

I have been looking for a review for this game. I have been sitting back on these games and waiting as failures tend to be big failures. I'll buy it when I get home. Thanks for the review.

I loved GSB, I'm ok with the battles playing out in a similar fashion.

I think Endless Space is a nice, modern but simple, 4X game.

It's a great STEPPING STONE to the real 'meaty' games like GalCiv2 or MOO2 or even Alpha Centari or Sins of a Solar Empire.

When things go according to plan, or at least look cool, I'm okay with them.

When I "lose" a battle because the simulation decides the fight has gone on long enough, despite the fact that I literally win the battle if I let it continue to run behind the "You lost" window, I am not okay with them.

That is a fine point. I definitely can't disagree with you there. I know the devs are always working on this, at least for now. I'm sure this is being looked at as I think I have seen this mentioned on the SPUF.

Exactly.

The game just doesn't have that much to offer. It has a brilliant interface, very easy to navigate and it looks really good as well. But there's just not a whole lot to it. It's way too simple for a turn-based strategy game. I got bored with it after a few days.

I just hope they release it brick and mortar (which they're supposed to do on August 24). I have limitations on what my interwebz can do, and downloading a roughly two-gig game is way, way out of the question.

Still, it is an independent game, and while it looks remarkably well done, I have my reservations, no that they're bad, but I'm not looking for the second coming of Masters of Orion or Galactic Civilizations 2 and all its (really at some point ludicrous) expansions.

I downloaded it last night after reading this review. I've only played about two hours, but I like it so far.
The galactic and planetary artwork is beautiful (like browsing reddit.com/r/spaceporn). [SFW]

And I really like the notification system a la Civ 5. It's nice to see Civ 5 and Endless Space adopting a notification interface that recognizes that strategically-minded and anal retentive are not the same thing. Let the game tell me when to make decisions, and I'll tell it how to make them.

It is a very good game, but I'm curious as to why no one mentioned the horrific tutorial.... it is probably the worst I have ever seen in my life!

it is actually simpler to just play the game and guess the functions

See I actually kind of like the game for what it is. It might be an odd compliment, but it's the perfect game to play on a second monitor while catching up on Hulu or Netflix.

I do however think it's more dense than it's often given credit, simply by virtue of how much better they present the same information.

Huh, what was it that you found so bad about it? It seemed pretty standard straight forward to me. The only thing I found lacking was that a small number of topics/mechanics were never explained.
