Home Coming In The Next 10 Days?

Sony's oft-delayed community service [http://www.us.playstation.com/PSN/Home] for the PS3 will be home for the holidays, according to reports.

Home, which was originally announced 2005, is "slated for release in the next 10 days", according to a report [http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/gadgets_and_gaming/article5292380.ece] by UK news outlet The Times Online.

Though why the Times Online wouldn't mention a specific date does lend an air of suspicion to their info, Sony releasing Home in the coming weeks certainly jives with what we already know. Sony has previously stated that Home would be out before the end of 2008, and Sony Computer Entertainment America's John Koller announcement [http://uk.games.ign.com/objects/025/025653.html] of Home's first sponsor: Red Bull. Considering all that, the current holiday buying bonanza, and competitor Microsoft's recently released New Xbox Experience, Sony putting out Home before the holidays seems not just plausible but arguably necessary for the company.

When reached for confirmation [http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/12/08/home-in-10-days-were-not-commenting-on-that-story-says-scee/] by videogaming247, a Sony rep predictably replied that "we're not commenting on that story, I'm afraid."

I'm sure a lot of PS3 owners are thinking "it's about damn time," but considering how long Home has been in the pipes, are people still excited for this?

I don't get what the big draw of this 'Home' is.

It's like second life on the PS3 or something?
An avatar you walk around with and chat with friends in your virtual apartment?
Spend real money on virtual furniture and clothing?

Does this sound really anti-climactic to anyone else?

I'm not trying to troll. I really, honestly, don't get the appeal of this 'game' (If it is a game).

IMO the goal of Home is more comparible to WoW than to Second Life. You can surf the internet while your in Home. Basicly you could be typing in this forum while talking over the mics... nothing new to PC gamers, but nothing wrong with it either. When you understand what acheivement points have done for multiplatform sales on 360, but turn those useless numbers into items you can "show off" to your freinds you will hopefully begin to realise the hook of Home.

By this time next year I'm confident the collective aspects of this new interface will have been demonstrated enough for most to understand..... if you never spent 100 hours farming gold for an epic flying mount then maybe you can't get the point of it until you have had an online addiction.

Home's been "just around the corner" so long (resisting Duke Nukem 4 joke) I'll believe it when I see it roll out in something beyond a beta version, and not a moment sooner.

The problem is, you're judging HOME as if it really is a "game". It's not, I assure you, it's just a cool application you can mess around with for a couple of minutes, like making your calculator say naughty words or bouncing a ball at the wall.

Personally, I can't wait for it to come along, but not in the "OMGGAGGAGFD I CAN'TZ WAITASTAS!!#!@#!" sortof excitement. It seems cool to mess around with and explore a bit around.

I guess that makes sense. But, like the calculator analogy, won't it just get boring after, say, 10 minutes or so? I mean, I have a gaming console...to play games. Not 'chill' in my virtual apartment.

Can you install the game or does the disc have to be in the drive? I'm assuming it's the latter of the two, which is odd to me considering that if I want to show off my achievement, or really get a good look at it, I have to exit the game I'm in, put in this non-game, and THEN I can get a good look at it.

Do I have that wrong? I really don't know, but that what it sounds like. And if that the case, it sounds very...silly.

The difference between a calculator and HOME is that HOME is updatable :) It'll get more addons as it goes along, and most if not all of the updates I would assume will be free.

You're missinformed, HOME is not an actual game on a disc, it'll be included in a PS3 firmware update or something. It'll take up around 3GB of space, but you could easily delete it. When you're in HOME, you can jump in with other people and jump into a game. After a round or so, you'll all be transported back to HOME.

While, it does sound a bit clunky (going into a game in HOME and going back to HOME), I think it would be interesting to see how you would pann out tournaments and stuff.

I've been waiting for HOME for a while now, and I'll probably end up disappointed when it does come out. The real question for HOME is how long will it take for someone to make pornographic content in it? My guess 30 Seconds.

I really don't either. I'll install it when it comes out, but if it never does come out, I wouldn't cry about it. It sounds like a glorified chat room to me, but we'll see.

Near as I can tell, its more like an MMO The Sims.
Except, at least in the Sims you can build skills and empty a bladder every now and again. It really does sound quite a bit like Second Life to me, but I really don't know.

Hopefully it won't go the way of the real Sims Online.
