Crytek Unveils Crysis 3 "Hunter" Trailer

The "Hunter" multiplayer mode in Crysis 3 looks very cool but just a wee bit familiar, too.

Every shooter needs a multiplayer mode, so it seems, but the trouble is that it's all been done before. We've all deathmatched, we've all captured the flags, we've all caught the chicken; the challenge for developers who need their games to stand out from the crowd is coming up with new and different ways for us to kill each other online.

Thus we have "Hunter," a new team-based multiplayer mode for the upcoming Crysis 3 that pits two nanosuit-equipped players - the hunters - against a squad of 14 highly-trained, heavily-armed but not cloaking-device-equipped Cell soldiers. The name of the game is simple: the hunters must kill the Cell troopers, the troopers must survive long enough to be evacuated from the ruins of New York City.

It's not necessarily the most original idea of all time, a point driven home for the benefit of anyone who missed it by the "come and get me" conclusion - all that's missing is "I ain't got time to bleed" - but the implementation promises to be very cool. I'm not sure what kind of staying power it will have, since this kind of game mode takes a lot more effort and commitment than your average three-minute deathmatch stress-reliever, but I'm sure looking forward to trying it.

looks pretty cool. I've always loved being sneaky, so if they pull it off right. It'll be crazy fun. Or a broken, unplayable mess. Real toss up right now.

Well, this game mode was epic in Halo 2. It's pretty epic in the Hunted Counter Strike mod too. Given Crysis 2's multiplayer, this will probably stink...

...ah well, back to Living Legends!

This mode wont work.

2vs14 might be considered an interesting challenge for the 2 players, but is absolutely frustrating for the 14 players. And btw. who decides who plays the hunters? These 2 spots will always be gone VERY quickly and when they're gone all you can do is play "hunted". Sounds fun.

Remember these words:
"This game mode will fail"

Only balanced game modes (equal numbers on both sides) can work fine.

Looks like fun, though I really don't see many of the stealthy tactics shown in the trailer working when you have a team of people using Voip.

Do the hunters get shoulder mounted laser cannons and infra-read vision?

In this kind of gamemode its fun to play on both sides no matter their numbers, and its not the first time it appears, it worked on Halo, Zombie Panic, etc...

The only problem that I see here (not here but on the actual gameplay of this) is that the invisible team is way overpowered since the bow appears to be a 1 hit kill weapon.

Similar thing was done in a mod called "Hidden:Source". It worked great. It was actually spooky to play as the grunts, hunting down an invisible killer.

EDIT: And when you DO kill one of the stronger guys, you really feel like you did just like 50 kills since it is kind of hard when they can be hiding anywhere, so doesn't really feel dull even if you get killed most of the time.

Hopefully they also follow hidden with claustrophobic environments and the ability to pin bodies to walls.

OT: This looks really cool, I love these kind of modes.

what hyped me most about this trailer wasn't the mode (looks alright I guess) but rather the environment
overgrown urban ruins?

I can't really comment on the games you described, because I haven't played them.

Anyway, I stand by my comment. I do not believe, that this game mode will be successfull.

Hidden:Source is the boss, and I hope they do not add pinning because pinned bodies loosen my bowels.

Great idea but horrible execution I mean look at what they have: infinite sprint, endless cloack, OHK bows, OHK melee(even if they had it just for the demo it's still OP), and who is the dumbass that thought about the idea that when a player dies he turns into a hunter? this unbalanced the entire mode.

The reason hidden source worked is because there was only one OP player and when people die, they don't turn OP, they die and wait for the game so it's balanced.
