Make Your Own Star Wars Bantha

Like Starwars.com [http://www.starwars.com/databank/creature/bantha/].

This allegedly simple project requires little more than some felt, stuffing, fake fur, a couple of buttons, a sewing needle, some thread and the ability to combine all of the above without poking your eye out. You'll also need some chenille stems, whatever that is (I thought she sang with The Captain back in the 70s) and "a whole lot of love."

Oh, who am I kidding? This looks complicated as hell. I couldn't make this thing to save my life, at least not without burning down my house. This 11-step craft reminds me of nothing so much as those "draw a cartoon character in four easy steps" things in the back of old comic books, where you start with one circle, then two circles, then a line and then blam, suddenly it's Archie and the gang. I hated those things; my drawings always came out looking like they were coming along swimmingly right up until that final step, at which point the 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck.

But there's no denying the little beastie is cute, and if you've sunk some points into the Arts and Crafts skill tree it'd make a great gift for that rabid Star Wars fan on your list. Or go to Plan B: Pay someone less spastic than you are to do it. Think you can handle this without having to call an ambulance and a lawyer? Decide for yourself at Starwars.com [http://www.starwars.com/kids/do/crafts/f20081124.html]!

"Sew the legs on to the bantha using a simple whipstitch."

I would easily loose an eye trying to sew the bantha together...possible and finger as well. Maybe some escapist should give it a try but make it unique in their own way and post pics of the fished product

I want one. But I put all my points into my personality and charm skills.

perhaps you could convince someone to make one for you?
Well yeah, but the arts and crafts skill tree has been woefully neglected by all. Or I'd have a Zangief sackboy by now too.

Wow, they really don't expect much from us, do they?

The Escapist is sewing-tarded. Who knew?

That thing sure is cute though. I want to make one.

I have a friend who is a really good sewer (I really doubt this is the right term). I think I have a new project for them...

Thanks for posting about my Bantha craft I wrote for Starwars.com!
Just to put you at ease, it REALLY is easy to make. I'm a crap seamstress, so I handsew all my crafts with just a regular stitch like you would do to mend holes in your socks.

A whipstich is just sewing over the fabric instead of just a regular stitch and is a pretty lazy way of sewing, trust me! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whip_stitch
Or you can just use a basic stitch. There's no rules on this. Heck, you don't even need a pattern. Just sew together rectangles and stuff it to look like a big loaf of bread. Then make 4 cyclinders for legs. And 2 long triangles for the horns; Buttons for eyes and felt strips for his mouth. Cover the hole thing in fake craft fur and you're done!

Another geeky project of mine you might dig is a Wii Clone Wars Lightsaber Cozy which uses felt and fabric glue with minimal sewing:

Thanks again for posting my craft and I hope you will try to make the Bantha doll. I swear if I can make it, anyone can!

Good luck and may the glue gun be with you!

By the way "chenille stems" are just another name for pipe cleaners. Apparently, in the last 5 years or so, some paranoid parents got together and nagged the craft industry to change the name of pipe cleaner so kids wouldn't be encouraged to know about pipes. *rolls eyes*
