Steam Reject Mutant Mudds Goes to GOG

Renegade Kid's platformer finds a home on GOG, Desura and Gamersgate.

When last we saw like an old serial hero [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118073-Valve-Rejects-Mutant-Mudds-For-Steam-Distribution] - Mutant Mudds has escaped that perilous deathtrap and gone to GOG, Desura and Gamersgate for a PC release.

You play as Max, a kid determined to save the world from squishy invaders in this platformer. Mutant Mudds has a 3D gimmick, in that you can leap jetpack-style and play either in the foreground or the background. Better be careful, since some of Max's enemies have ways of making 3D work for them too. [http://www.renegadekid.com/mutantmudds_CAST.htm]

"I know I am a little biased," developer Jools Watsham Tweeted, "but I think you're going to love Mutant Mudds PC. The new levels have turned out great. Plus, we have added something that improves replayability and creates a sense of community. What could it be?" Watsham didn't say, so this extra widget will probably be a release-day surprise.

Speaking of release day, that date will be August 30th on GOG, Desura, Gamersgate and Renegade's own site. The initial price tag is $7.99, but that will only be until September 5th; after that it goes up to $9.99. Its Nintendo incarnation already has a lot of fans; with luck, it will make an equally large splash on PC.

I didn't even know Steam could go so far to reject games. It looks... nice. But it doesn't make me want to buy it. It looks bland and simplistic with the background gimmick that has been done before.
C'mon designers, you are the ones who need to answer the questions: Why do I want to buy this game?

It always bugs me that Steam will reject games like this but allow every shitty Source mod game to be sold. Or even worse, a broken mess of a game that doesn't work at all.

I'd like to buy this game on Steam because I like Steam, so come on Steam don't reject a good game.
Just to clarify I'm Steaming about this but I'm happy I can pick it up on GOG.

I can sorta see the logic, it looks very tangentially similar to a Mario game I guess, so perhaps they didn't want to leave them self open to lawsuit. Imo the game looks like crap and has been done better before.

It looks to be yet another indie platformer. You know for a group of developers that bash the mainstream for being to stagnant the indie guys seems to be doing a lot of the same. Almost every time I hear of a new indie game that has captured the hearts of gamers I immediately check to see if its a rouge-like or a platformer. 9 times out of 10 it is, and I'm no longer interested.

Easy to see you didn't play much video games from the mid 80s to the mid 90s, platformer were all over the place back then, number of them getting release today still seem small to me compared to the size the gaming industry is now.

I was looking around to see if the PC port will be able to take advantage of stereo lcd glasses or other technologies to replicate the effect on the 3DS, but it appears it will only have a simulated DOF blur effect when you change layers. Disappointing

Not only has it been done before, it's been done in 3D before [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Boy_Wario_Land] just like the original 3DS version of this game. And by before, I mean 1995. It was actually pretty good, as long as you're a fan of the color red. Heh.

The whole certification process for Steam is still a mystery to me. On one hand they allow for some very crappy stuff and on the other they reject at the very least halfway decent or even good games.

I did play a fair amount of 90s games. Doesn't excuse the fact that there are waaaaaaaay too many platformer indies games. Indie devs can and have done better these. This isn't the mid 90s anymore, games should be made with that in mind. I'm not saying don't make platformers and rouge-likes, I'm saying that those 2 genres are getting to be as stagnant as FPSs in the mainstream.

Seriously, I don't understand the praise the game got. Yeah, I downloaded it from the eShop (if only to get some use out of my 3DS). but it's a run-of-a-mill platformer with no original thought in it whatsoever. Yeah, gameplay-wise it's a-ok and some jump are quite difficult indeed. Otherwise, this game has NOTHING to offer. Not an interesting IP at all, no particularly interesting level designs and the music is soso, no boss fights and no decent use of the 3D effect OR the other 4 buttons we have available.

Nostalgia to 8-bit does NOT mean that you can skip 20 years of gaming. >:C

Even if this game was on steam I doubt I would have bought it. It seems generic, other than that background thing. Even that seems like it would cause problems after a while.

Its well past time for both consumers and developers to start rejecting steam anyway.

GoG is certainly a better home anyway.
