League of Legends Wrests Site from Porn Group

Riot wins one battle in the fight against domain squatters, with more clashes to come.

League of Legends, the fantasy RTS that has become the most popular PC title in the whole darn world, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118411-League-of-Legends-Topples-World-of-Warcraft-as-Most-Played-PC-Game] has had to endure the humiliation of domain squatting until recently. The website LeagueOfLegends.co - no 'm' - had been snapped up by Martin Hornak who used it to funnel people to porn sites. Riot filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization, but that complaint has now been terminated and Riot has gained control over the domain name.

This isn't the only domain problem on Riot's 'to do' list. Another site - unrelated to .co - which Riot has a grief with is LeagueofLegendsPorn.com, a somewhat less sophisticated title than .co. As yet the domain itself goes nowhere in particular, but Riot has filed another WIPO complaint to deal with this pesky irritant. The LeagueofLegendsPorn.com case is still pending, but the .co complaint is marked as Terminated [http://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/search/case.jsp?case_id=24391] on the WIPO site. Terminated, in this context, means that the parties reached a settlement before the case could come to judgement, but details of that settlement have yet to be revealed.

The last time something like this affected Riot and its insanely popular RTS, it was to do with the site support.leagueoflegends.com. In that instance Riot successfully proved that the owner of the disputed site had acted in bad faith. The WIPO panel also noted that "the Complainant has presented uncontested evidence that after registration of the disputed domain name the Respondent subsequently changed the function of the associated website in order to persuade Internet users who visit the said website unknowingly to download malware." In that same month, Riot had to tell its customers that their accounts had been hacked; [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117844-Hackers-Gank-League-of-Legends-EU-Accounts] all the more reason to take any domain squatter seriously.

The latter site isn't nearly as nefarious as the the former. I can't imagine someone typing "LeagueofLegendsPorn.com" by accident.

Rule 34 plagues that game. I typed in a character's name into google (with safe search on) once and it brought up fan-porn of a completely different character from the game :/

From what I have heard, it has no way near as much as WoW.

Alas, Leagueoflegends.co had it coming and was obviously playing on typos. Adding 'porn' to the end, as Mao/Fappy said, it is far from preying on accidents.

That said, I now have an annoying bit of curiosity pulling at my mind.

But what if I hit my hotkey of the word "Porn" while typing.
I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who has one and it's a misstake anyone and their cat could make.

[sub][sub][sub](Please note that I do not have a hotkey for the word porn and was in fact joking, you can now stop looking at me like I'm sick.)[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Reminds me of an incident when I used to play Runescape.
Going to the website but removing the '.' after 'www' ended up leading me to a porn site aswell! I never even knew cucumbers could go that far! I'm not kidding

I'm sure Riot games can certainly brag that they have more accounts but with their bullshit summoner's code they certainly have forced A LOT of their customers to either smurf for so many reasons.

-main account banned
-Just to have an alt account
-Sell account to profit via elo or amount of unlocked content

Also if I'm not mistaken going to penny arcade without the hyphen brought people to a pornographic website. I don't know if that site exists anymore but if that got to exist for a long time then why their site?
if your accounts got banned twice you are just a rager or a troll. ive played for 3 years with over 1600 games and have never even been warned.

also, penny arcade has been around longer, but league of legends certainly has more money. and money is power.

I'm pretty sure you would just be considered honest and practical. :)

Thank you fetish filters, I have been scarred enough with reckless link pressing.

Interestingly, a quick search through fanfiction show the some people REALLY LOVE Teemo/Kennen.

Both are your own fault usually. you don't get banned for no reason and selling your account isn't allowed in about every online game.
