ABC Confirms Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D" Is in the Works

Avenger's director, Joss Whedon, will co-write and possibly direct a Marvel universe TV show.

Joss Whedon is no longer just a quirky writer with a talent for churning out cult TV shows. The groundbreaking success of The Avengers has given the writer/director an enviable amount of clout, and he's hardly hurting for job offers. Those offers are going to have to wait, however, as Whedon has already announced he'll not only be returning to direct a sequel to The Avengers, but he'll also be co-writing and possibly directing a live-action TV pilot provisionally titled S.H.I.E.L.D. ABC just confirmed that the show has been greenlit.

According to a report from Deadline, Whedon's contract with Disney, Marvel's parent company, not only included directing The Avengers, but also called on him to develop a Marvel TV project. Whedon will be co-writing the pilot with his brother, Jed Whedon, and Maruissa Tancharoen, both of whom worked on Dollhouse, one of Whedon's many TV projects.

S.H.I.E.L.D, for those of you who don't read comic books or pay attention during films, is the perennial anti-terrorist organization that, last time I checked, funds the Avengers. It's not clear if the TV pilot will take place in the same universe as the money-spinning film, or if Whedon will be taking a leaf out of Marvel's comic-book (ho ho) and pulling some alternate dimension trickery. The show's title implies it'll focus on the B-list agency jobbers who clean up after Thor and the Hulk, but it'd be very strange if boss-man, Nick Fury, doesn't make at least a token appearance, and Samuel L. Jackson doesn't come cheap.

Production on S.H.I.E.L.D will begin immediately, but there's no time frame for when the series will reach our televisions. Marvel TV also has a few other comic book-themed projects in development, including a new Hulk series.

Whedon on tv is no bad thing. Unless we're talking about Dollhouse, which technically didn't happen after the world's superheroes collectively flew it into a blackhole eradicating both them and it from existence.
But that aside, Whedon on tv is no bad thing, and I'm intrigued to see what they do with this. Will it be a 6-part mini series to pad out the time between movies? Will it offer up a season per "phase" of Avengers movies? Will it feature the Avengers themselves? And most importantly of all, will this be how they introduce the new heroes that will be cropping up in the next Avengers title?
All good questions, the answer of course is "potato".

Damn. When I heard about the TV show they were doing, while I guessed that it would be about Shield, I was really hoping it would be about Doctor Strange. But no we have this, which will likly be 27 different kinds of awesome, and an Ant-Man movie, which will be 127 different kinds of arse. God do I hate Ant-Man.

While I'm excited to see a SHIELD series with Joss Whedon involved; I'm also worried that with so many Marvel properties (as well as other superheroes) in development the market will become oversaturated with superhero properties.

Were I to guess, I'd imagine it's going to at least start out following S.H.I.E.L.D before the "Avengers Initiative," and possibly even before Nick Fury. This avoids the "alternate universe" stuff, but also ensures a realistic casting budget.

Something in my head gives me the sense that they'll be tracking/cataloging/capturing/etc. superhuman threats (before eventually deciding some could be useful). Which I guess basically means Disney is paying Whedon to re-write Heroes.

This actually disappoints me, and I say that as a Whedon and Marvel fan. The guy has made so many fantastic things, and the only thing to get him true fame is something his talents were somewhat wasted on. Don't get me wrong, Avengers was alright, but it was so simple and empty of of substance so it could reach the largest audience possible, I just had trouble staying interested. Perhaps I am just spoiled after seeing how much better all the marvel cartoons explore the universes and the characters, even the Avengers cartoon (lol). Whedon's real talents are with large, clever things, but Avengers was anything but. They even recycled a villain from one of the predecessor's movies they were playing it so safe, only to tease at the end with a villain that would have been genuinely interesting. That's pretty low.

It's a Joss Whedon TV show, which means it'll be awesome. It's S.H.I.E.L.D, which means it'll be awesome. And it's NOT Fox, which means it isn't going to be cancelled halfway through season 1 and end up kept alive solely through a cult following of fans dedicated to it.

So yeah, colour me interested, massively so. I have yet to see a bad Whedon film or TV show, after all...

Also, who else is hoping that Phil Coulson comes back, either for this series or for the next set of films (Phase Two)? I realise he died in the Avengers film, but still, the comics do give a way back, that would make sense from a technological standpoint - the Life Model Decoys. It stands to reason Coulson would have had access to something like that, given his status within S.H.I.E.L.D, so he could have faked his death using one to rally the team in the film? Or return as one?

Yes, I'm just saying all this because he was awesome and I miss the character. But still...

I don't want to see Ant-Man, but I'd love to see a Wasp movie. But regarding Doctor Strange, don't give up hope just yet. Bear in mind, Phase One was all about the technological side of the Marvel Universe, whereas given the teaser of Thanos at the end of The Avengers, and the comments from Marvel themselves, Phase Two will be looking more at the magical side of the Marvel Universe. Which means that a Doctor Strange movie would be a perfect fit for the current direction of the series, even if he wouldn't join the Avengers Initiative specifically. Until The Avengers 2 is released, there's still a chance... :)

It's Joss Whedon going back to TV.
It could be a Damage Control or Re Gex series, and I would still watch every episode.

Ouch, sorry about that, didn't think it through. But I didn't specifically say what happened... but it's implied, again, sorry.
