Cortex Command Finally Sees Release After Eleven-Year Beta

The jar-bound geniuses of Cortex Command get a September Steam release.

Some beta tests last longer than others, but Cortex Command must have been aiming for some kind of record with its eleven year development period. This the official log [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106100-Get-Into-the-Holiday-Spirit-With-the-Humble-Indie-Bundle-2] promises that the game will get a Steam release in September.

The announcement came with a 41 minute long preview playtest video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhyZFT4Aw_Y&list=UUnZCKy-h2vS5M39rWwTN9gw&index=1&feature=plcp] but for those of you who don't have that kind of time: you play as a team of plump human brains, sent out into space to explore and claim resources. Though these jar-bound geniuses are fragile, they have expendable robot shells that they can send out to do their dirty work. Brains being egotistical sods none of them can bear to share, so conflict arises when two or more teams try to claim the same resource node. Lose your brain, lose the game, so rapid deployment - being the first with the most - is your best bet for dominating the battlefield.

The zombie cave scenario shown in the trailer is a January 2012 offering, but it has the advantage of not being forty one minutes long Ye Gods! However for those who like their battle games with both co-op and multiplayer modes, destructible scenery, and what looks to me like a remarkably complex interface, Cortex Command could be your new go-to, sometime later this week.

I forgot I bought this game in ages long past!
I wonder if I'll get it on steam automatically because I also bought it a second time in one of the humble bundles.

If you've still got the dowload link for that Humble Bundle you should be able to grab it from there - they generally update the download pages with new versions.

I have put hundreds of hours into this game over the years, mostly because of the modding involved. In my opinion that's what the game is really about. It's incredibly easy to learn to mod, and so much fun. All you actually need is Notepad and MS Paint. Creating your own incredibly silly weapons and units is what makes this game so much fun for me, doubly when you play it with friends.

I love this game! More shooting and explosions than any AAA shooter you've ever seen and SO modable. Sniping out one of a dropship's engines and watching it cartwheel into the terrain must be one of my favorite gaming moments.

I just hope they've tightened up the AI a little.

And online multiplayer? Pretty please?

So you basically play as a space-bound version of the Think Tank from Old World Blues?
It's kind of like a 2d action/RTS. You buy various units that arrive by dropship. You directly control one, and you can switch between them. The rest follow various AI scripts, like Sentry mode or Gold Dig mode. Explosions, collisions, and impacts are very well simulated because units are not individual objects, but made up of several (in some cases dozens) of independent parts.

I just love Danny Baranowsky's track in this game. Glad it's seeing an official release, so I should expect it in my library soon after that Humble Indie Bundle, just like with Revenge of The Titans.

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about this game.
Now for the uncontrollable, uncomfortable excitement to come back in anticipation to playing it.
