FIFA 13 Brings Home The Sales Cup

EA has sold over 4.5 million copies of FIFA 13 in just five days.

Football - proper football, where the ball actually spends a lot of time in contact with people's feet - is still struggling to find a sizable audience in North America. This is made readily apparent by the respective sales of EA's FIFA 13.

In the 24 hours following their North American release, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the best-selling sports franchise clocked up a respectable 353,000 sales between them. This pales in comparison to the UK launch, however, which racked up 1.23 million sales in 48 hours. Surprise! The UK likes football.

Over the past five days, worldwide sales of the game have surpassed the 4.5 million mark, making it the biggest launch of 2012 and the biggest sports game release of all time if EA's claims are to be believed. The company made similar claims about FIFA Soccer 10, which sold only 1.7 million copies in its first week. Last year's installment - which due to EA's dreadfully boring naming conventions is not called FIFA: Rise of the Soccer Lizards - sold 3.2 million copies on consoles, with another 890,000 on iOS.

FIFA 13's online modes are also proving popular. According to EA, the game boasts some 800,000 simultaneous players, making it one of the most popular online games in the company's history.

The critical response to the game has been positive, [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/fifa-soccer-13/critic-reviews] with a couple of outlets dishing out those precious 10/10 scores. The physics engine introduced in FIFA 12 has been tweaked, making it far more predictable and, sadly, far less funny. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAR6I_T-uVc]

Been trying to find some hard FIFA vs Madden sales figures but Google failed me. I'm guessing FIFA wipes the floor with Madden, seeing how nobody outside the US gives a flying fuck about American Football. America is a big market but it's not as big "everywhere else." It has always amused me that their is a game aimed at one country only, but if people enjoy it and it makes money, who cares?

That's pretty sweet. I loved FIFA 12's new physics-based system and FIFA 13's demo just seems to build beautifully on that (I love the ball-physics....giggity).

Now I haven't gotten it yet but after putting a hole in the wall due to FIFA 12 (don't ask) but I intend to get it as soon as I convince myself that I won't do it again after losing on a bullshit header that the fucking defense should have easily fucking cleared or at the very least the fucking goalie should have grabbed!!!! *Smash noises

...well shit, I guess I'm not as calmed down about it as I hoped. I'll get the putty...

Anyway, that's cool news.

Also, as PAR for these types of news threads: Inb4 the sillies who say "Who cares, it's just a roster update?".

Not as badly as you might think. Last time I checked FIFA had hit the 100million sales mark, while Madden had just broke 90 million.

One sales statistic I'd love to hear is how many people bought FIFA 13 on the Wii, only to return it the next day when they realised it was literally just FIFA 12 with an updated player roster (I really wish I was exaggerating here, but - sadly - I'm not... I'm really, really not).

Oh, and extra points for the choice of video, Mr Carter.

Dude, last time I played a Fifa game I accidentally broke my bed. I threw myself back during a little rage and one of the slats under the mattress broke.

Also, I agree that it's total bullshit how crappy your defence can be at times, and there's nothing you can do about it other than don't let the ball get that close.

In fairness I have a friend who absolutely loves American football, so much so he's forced the rest of us to take an interest in it, I still don't really give much of a damn about all sports but it's still...Interesting. Anyway I'm sure there are others that enjoy it.

Then Black Ops II comes out and wipes the floor sales-wise, we all know it will happen.

It is indeed true that Fifa and football are popular over here. Pretty much everybody on my Xbox friends list is currently playing it, and they all got the last one, and the one before that and...

As long as they have monopoly over the football, EA has no reason to care about other video games.

This is why we can't have nice things. R.I.P. Maxis

Thing is the Americans are entitled to call their game football, I used to troll Americans about hand egg but I learned something about the origins of football. Football was called football back in the medieval era and was named that because the poor people played it on foot, nobles etc played games like polo on horseback. They named it because the players where on foot not because they kicked it with their feet. It was also banned at one point because it was blamed for young men neglecting archery practice (we needed archers to keep pwning the French).

As American hand egg is played on foot they are accurately naming their sport.

This Game has been such a welcome relief after FIFA 12 that was at times Broken. No more do I have sweaty Goals scored against me because my central defenders have tripped over each-other and injured themselves, No more do I get sent of for shirt pulling while my penalty claims are denied after nemanja vidic breaks my leg.

Also, It was a good move to make a seperate VP for online play, But its shit that you can't use your Career VP in Kick off.

Now for FIFA 14 PLEASE: fix the shit shit shit EA servers, No online pass, No of EAs douchy micro-transactions, reduce loading times and put the greek League in the game.

PES says hello to your monopoly idea, and Maxis is still around, they make Sims, Spore and Sim City, like they have been for the last 25 years.
