Interesting, been waiting for this game. And I always loved dungeon keeper, so I think I shall buy this!

Thanks for the review. =)

So it's Dwarf Fortress Lite? I can get behind that.

Too bad the AI sounds... kind of stupid.

So Dwarf Fortress Lite? Considering Dwarf Fortress is free, and expanding, it doesn't seem a particularly good buy. That said, its probably good for those without the stones to plunge directly into the maelstrom of Dorf Fort without prior experience.

No baby meatshields, cat bone floodgates or magma cannons?

Looks like its a while untill Dwarf Fortress gets any competition.

Sounds like dwarf fortress lite considering how complicated dwarf fortress is that isn?t a bad thing.

A Game of Dwarves isn't meant to be a replacement or substitute for Dwarf Fortress. Aside from the fact that you're leading Dwarves in the construction of fortress (and the founding of an empire), there really isn't much to compare. It's thematically similar but an entirely different game, and as I said in the review, there aren't many opportunities for audience crossover.

Was DF AI smarter?

Because I remember one dwarf seeing an Antman, and running away until he hits a wall and dies.

No really, that happened.
The stock phrase for any stories from DF is "This is where I'd normally call BS, but since this is Dwarf Fortress, I fully believe this has happened."

The DF AI was pretty good, from what I've seen. The pathfinder is efficient, and while I wouldn't trust any of them to command a real army, they're OK at proper enemy targeting and emergency response.

The reason I implied the AI in DF was better was because at least the DF dwarves can respond to being hungry and will look for beds, unlike what this review said about AGoD dwarves.

That said, DF AI has are... quirks.

Quirks like dwarves running into walls and dying.

Quirks like an inexperienced dwarf misdiagnosing a broken leg as "rotted lungs" and surgically removing them from a patient.

Quirks like a humongous Forgotten Beast entering the map, stalking towards the cowering fortress, and then chasing a kitten around the map for several minutes.

And that's not looking into the physical quirks, like a militia commander's cat viciously shaking a giant around by its torso. SERIOUSLY.

It's nice to see that we're getting some new games that take the basic idea behind Dwarf Fortress and run with it. I love the idea of DF, but the user interface is terrible. And I don't mean the graphics; I can handle a roguelike, especially if tile sets are on the table. I mean the user interface is downright terrible, with basic options two or three menus deep and absolutely nothing intuitive. Considering that a lot of the basics we're talking about were pretty thoroughly hammered out in the first Sim City game, that's some seriously bad design.

Keep digging men; somewhere in this ravine cave is a lost shipment of Jaffa Cakes.

The last line of the first page made me think of this episode of Married with Children where Al was so lazy that he couldn't reach the remote & had to put up with what Peg left on.

From what I've seen it's way more of a game for people who miss Dungeon Keeper.

I was just about to comment on you saying the DF dwarves are smart and then I noticed this... xD I didn't think it was possible for dwarves to get more stupid than the DF dwarves, but here you go.

Although a lot of the crazy isues have been fixed up - I don't recall seeing the "Limp = REMOVE THE LUNGS" issue for a while now. Although... they have recently received new ways to be stupid. And awesome.

I can't wait to see what Toady's climbing mechanic does for their intelligence.

Personally, I love the game. Never managed to get into DF, although I've given it a couple of attempts.

I find AGoD to be far closer to a building simulator than a combat game. I'm about half way through the campaign and so far, combat is initiated only when you want it to be (i.e. when you tunnel into an enemy zone).

I didn't find that the dwarf AI was as stupid as implied in the OP, although I did find it very easy to make mistakes that got my dwarves killed (i.e. setting them up in a digging pattern that would prevent them from making it back to a table/bed) if you're not paying attention.

If I had to pick a game that "felt" closest to AGoD for me, it wouldn't be DF or DK, it would be Minecraft Overlord.
