Halo 4 Scores New Multiplayer Game Type Next Week

A popular playlist makes a return as 343 Industries begins game type rotations.

Halo 4 is barely out of the gates, and the new shooter is already getting a title update that will add a new game type to the online multiplayer suite. Scheduled to arrive the week of November 12th, the update will bring back the popular SWAT deathmatch mode, which Halo: Reach fans will surely remember.

Unlike most other Halo multiplayer modes, SWAT tweaks weapon damage and armor abilities to allow for one-shot headshot kills with any weapon. The mode also restricts the use of ordinance drops, ensuring that players only have the DMR, Battle Rifle, and Magnum sidearm with which to dispatch one another.

In an update posted on the Halo Waypoint app on Xbox Live, community manager Jessica Shea notes that weekly playlist tweaks will be the norm for Halo 4. In addition to the standard playlist sets, players will be treated to rotational playlists with varying game types. If the response to any given playlist is strong enough, it may find a place as a more permanent game type.

I hope they do, because right now the playlist that got launched with the game are very standard and not very diverse in custom gametypes.

Oh no! Not SWAT!

As great as Halo's defacto hardcore mode is, I am not looking forward to getting beat down in yet another generation of the game.

I stank at SWAT in Halo 2, Halo 3 and Reach, I'll bet in 4 I find it just as addictive and that I'll get womped just as frequently.

Damn you 343!

Well, seeing as my copy finally came in the mail, Im gonna have to buy a gold membership now. Though I remember playing SWAT in Reach, and sucked at it (I always aim for center mass, headshots are too much of a pain for me.)

I was hoping I'd see SWAT when I read the title - my favourite gametype returns! Pop-pop-pop all day long. :D

This gametype will be nothing but a DMR reign of terror. Let the one hit kill carnage begin!

When its a DMR fest it is great.

When your using a magnum as a difficulty multiplier it becomes a whole new challenge.

Ordnance, not Ordinance, unless they added a mode where you could call down religious orders to smite your foes. Which would be awesome.

People... Like SWAT mode? I knew it was popular, but Ididn't realise real people actually liked it. It's just Halo, but with all the stuff that makes it interesting stripped out!

And it drains people away from all the other gametypes, which leaves even less attention for the objective based game types.

I like SWAT because it keeps all the 1337 MLG FUR LOIF players in one place. Of course, that makes it less enticing to actually play SWAT, but that's the price you pay. No, I'm not impressed by your MLG avatar and yes, I can actually play more than one game type. I'm sure there must be someone out there with an MLG avatar who isn't an insufferable n00b, but you all know the type I'm complaining about. Apologies to the non-idiots, absolutely no offense intended.

Exactly. It's a fun occasional change of pace, but buying Halo so you can play SWAT is like buying a chess set so you can stick the pieces up your nose. But the perception among MLG n00bs is that screen-centering is the measure of a good player in what is supposed to be a slow-paced, tactical shooter. I never understood why they don't play a game that actually has good twitch gameplay if everything else is beneath them.

Headhunter can be either super fun or super frustrating. In the end it comes down to who can get a bead on the head first.

Cool, hopefully this means they will add more modes in the future like multi-team (love me some rocket race), firefight, and maybe even scoring mode for the Campaign.

Hey, woooooh...

I'm gonna start by saying that I really like SWAT, it was my most played game type, and I am the least similar person to what youve just described there, and even given my experience with that mode I'm completely unaware of what youre talking about.
Yes, I dont talk to people other than my friends on Halo, but I cant actually recall any time anybody did speak on SWAT. Ive never received any messages, nothing. Ive had no bad, nor good, experiences with that little slice of that community.

I dont see how Halo doesnt have "good twitch gameplay". Ive played most FPSs, and I'm not a fan of the genre, however I do enjoy SWAT. Maybe Ive just somehow missed those particular games that do it better, but the only game that comes to mind with that kind of gameplay is Rainbow Six: Vegas, which i did like, but not as much as Halo.

Not that this really concerns me considering I'm completely avoiding Halo 4, i just thought what you two were saying was just a little unfair.

They took out BTB for SWAT?
Are they serious? :/ Whoever makes these decisions now... just get rid of them because, it does not take an expert to realise how stupid that decision is.
