Hotline Miami Sequel Confirmed

The game's creator says the planned DLC release has grown into a full sized game.

Hotline Miami is described by the developer as a "top down f*ck 'em up", marrying a slick soundtrack with a bit of the ol' ultraviolence in a retro setting. Creator Jonatan Söderström originally intended to make some DLC for the top down action title, but that DLC has now evolved into a sequel.

Söderström mentions the next game on his Twitter account:

The developer originally planned for Hotline Miami's DLC to be "about as long as the full game", but he explained that the scope of the expansion was greater than expected. "It seems like it will end up bigger (in terms of the number of levels we've got planned) than the first, so it feels reasonable to release it as a full game rather than a DLC.

"We've barely begun working on it though," he clarified. "Still got things we need to patch with the first game, so that's the main priority right now."

A notable feature in the first game was the surreal track list, featuring songs from nine composers. At this point, Söderström still hasn't finalized any music artists for the sequel, despite mentioning a "soundtrack" in his earlier tweet. "Music wise I'm not sure for the second game yet," he said. "Looks like a couple of them might do more tracks for the sequel, but we've been looking at some other bands as well. Want to keep it fresh."

As long as there's more Jasper Byrne stuff, I'll- ...oh, who am I kidding. This game has secured a purchase from me either way.

You know, if EA did something like this, people would comment that EA was just being greedy, trying to get more money for the same product. Yet here, they are celebrating this company doing it. I'm not really for the idea of converting DLC into a full game, regardless of the reason. If it is really that much more impressive, just cut it down to be DLC size, and then use the leftovers as a starting point for the sequel.

People don't like *free* DLC getting turned into full-length products. There was no evidence the Hotline Miami DLC was going to be free.

I don't see what's objectionable about a company deciding to increase length and price tag simultaneously.
