Yahtzee Judges Your Creations in Indie Speed Run

Indie Speed Run will pit teams of students, amateurs, and professionals against each other in a 48-hour bid to create the best videogame.

The panel of judges for the inaugural Indie Speed Run [http://www.indiespeedrun.com/devsite/index.php] is something of a who's who for indie development. Featuring The Escapist's own Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw alongside Markus "Notch" Persson of Minecraft fame with Ron Gilbert, Trent Oster, Jason Rohrer, Vander Caballero, Kellee Santiago, and Dino Patti rounding out the roster of judges. It's an impressive list, to be sure, and if anybody is going to be able to pick out a real gem from the entries, this is the gang to do it.

"We've always loved the innovation and creativity that comes out of game jams," said Michael Kayatta, co-founder of Indie Speed Run, "but it's hard asking people from around the world to be in the same place on the same day. That's why we made Indie Speed Run exclusively online, with a 48-hour countdown timer that can be started at a time that works for the developer, not just the jam. We also wanted to reward creators by putting their work in front of the industry's top minds, and incentivize them with money can be used to further develop their ideas."

With The Escapist as the Presenting Partner, Indie Speed Run is an international, online Game Jam, where developers from all walks of life will have 48 hours to create the best game possible. Indie Speed Run kicked off today, and the entries will be accepted until January 6, 2013. After all submissions have been received, there will be a Free Play and Judging period through the end of January, with the winner being announced in February, and the first place team taking home a $2,500 prize. During the Free Play and Judging period, you'll be able to check out some of the judging process as well as play the games for yourself right here, exclusively on The Escapist. Keep an eye out for more information on that come January, and maybe you can find your own diamond in the rough.

As an added bonus for any enterprising Publisher's Club members, we're also pleased to offer discount codes for 50% off of the $25 entry fee for the Jam. Keep an eye on your PMs for more information on that, and, to anybody bold enough to take the challenge, I wish you the best of luck.

Cool. I remember when something like this was done before.
Hope I can get some of the games for myself to play this time.

Wonder if it would be possible to kill you, steal your identity and take your place as a judge...

Shit you did not hear that.

Right, is anyone else from the Escapist interested in entering this? Because if so, then hit me up! I want to take part as either a level designer and/or a writer, either or both is fine with me, and would love to be part of a team, so if anyone here needs either or both of those things for their game then get in touch please!

My entry will be a classic I'm sure we could all enjoy for hours on end. It'll be called Hoopstick. You use the mouse to swing a stick and hit a hoop to keep it upright as it rolls downhill.

Spoiler alert: The kid dies of tetanus 'cause the iron hoop was rusted. It'll be a real tear-jerker.

Hmm, so the game has to have these elements
- space/space station as a setting
- philosphical concept thoughts of afterlife and death in the theme
- surival horror atmosphere
- flower or scarf accessory
- point and click interface but a platformer type camera view
- pixel art graphics (well that's a given, it is an indie comp after all :p )
- an NPC that follows you that's a gentle giant type of monster
- it should come with a real dice that you need to roll for certain gameplay challenges
- add an awesome multiplyer (at least one, best in combination) - robot, dinosaur, something on fire, big gun, Morgan Freeman etc.

I think that covers it all.

I'm a programmer and may be interested in some auxiliary roles and a musician that might be interested in doing this. Auxiliary roles, Like writer, psychologist, voice actor, etc. I'll try to contact some artists i know, but if your an artist and like to be make a game with me, I'll be happy to consider you or perhaps doing a second game.

I'm thinking about starting one game this Friday at around 7pm. But May wait for next weekend if i can't get gather a party in the next couple days.

Also a previous game jam entry: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/604452
(i use haxe/NME which can target flash).

For the escapist:
Do you have the layout and instructions for uploading the game. Also, can we upload multiple times or is it a one time thing.
Also, do we choose how the prize money is split or is it just split evenly among the team.
And i assume we can choose if and how we split entry free.
I assume flash is an acceptable format. are there any other formats acceptable (.apk for example)?
Do we retain rights if we win? If so, what?
Do we retain rights if we lose?
Do we need to submit are code?
Is public domain and creative commons work disallowed? The rules seem to suggest this, but I wanted to make sure.

I'd be interested in co-writing. It seems like a fun thing to do but I'm not a great writer and I don't have much free time.

this sounds really awesome and the game will be here on the escapist so EVERYBODY wins.

my idea: you play as a snowman in hell.
- the art style is simple, compact and "cutesy wotsy"
- you leave a trail of snow that melts after 3 seconds
- you die from fire (shocker) and demon attacks (selected number of fires and demons on each level)
-you win levels by shoting the blocks the level is built up by on demons and use power up
-there are temporary power ups (limited uses and only last a few seconds)
putting rocks in snowballs
yellow snow missiles
carrot shots
snowflake shurikens
coal mines
(snow-ish stuff, you get the idea)

problem: may look a little too much like the binding of Issac and (a less violent) bomberman had a baby

from the indi speed run FAQ page

doesn't yathzee live in brisbane, last time i checked brisbane wasn't in new zealand. learn geography FAQ page

I'd log to do this but I'm not an artist and the rules say you can't use outside resources, shame. ;_;

Yes, check out www.indiespeedrun.com. The upload button appears after completion. You can compete multiple times, which would allow you to upload multiple games.
You get to choose - the check goes to Team Captain, though, since he or she will be the one to absorb the $25 gate-keeper fee.
Flash and HTML5 are preferred, and will get you most visibility from the community.
Yup!
Yup!
Nope, but ISR reserves the right to ask for it if there is any speculation of foul play.
For this I would suggest checking out the FAQ page. There will be a lot of information pertaining to that question up later today.

Hey, if anyone is working on a game for this, I'm actor and would be willing to lend my voice talents. I have a studio for voice recording already, so that's not an issue for me. Message me if you're interested.
