Ubisoft Survey Hints at Co-op for Next Assassin's Creed

The follow-up to Assassin's Creed III could be out as soon as next year.

Ubisoft followed Assassin's Creed II with two immediate sequels, so it's not really surprising that the publisher is considering the same course of action for Assassin's Creed III. If a survey sent out by Ubisoft is any indication, the next Assassin's Creed title could be out as early as next year. The questionnaire, which aims to gauge gamers' interest in a variety of gameplay aspects that might show up in the next game in the series, also asks whether players would like to see a cooperative mode incorporated into the campaign. While there's no guarantee that Ubisoft would add co-op play even if the survey indicates overwhelming interest from gamers, it appears that they're at least considering the option.

In addition to questioning gamers about whether they want to see more of Connor or Desmond, the survey asks "If it was to become available next year, how likely are you to purchase the next Assassin's Creed game?" Considering Brotherhood was released about a year after Assassin's Creed II, it wouldn't be unexpected to see a new game continuing Connor's story by the end of 2013. What would be a little stranger, however, is if that follow-up had a co-op mode during the campaign, as hinted by this survey option: "Possibility to have a friend join the game in order to help me at any time during the solo mode." Survey-takers can respond that this feature is a "must-have," simply "nice to have," or that they're "not interested."

The survey also gauged gamers' reactions to other prominent titles, like Uncharted 3. A survey certainly isn't an announcement or confirmation of anything, but it's interesting to think that the next Assassin's Creed could get new features based on feedback from the general gaming public. A cool drop-in/drop-out co-op mode could be kind of neat; one that forces me to go through the game with a dopey AI partner when I don't have a friend around, not so much.

Drop-In, Drop-Out easy going co-op would be alright but if it takes the Resi-5 route that would be no good (if I may quote Sonic the Hedgehog). I was about ready to go angry and ranty here but then I realized I've only ever played the first 2 AC games. I'll continue to watch what AC does but there isn't much that would get me back into the series outside of going back to what AC1 was (ie: no training other people, no building a town, no tower defense, no ship combat: all murder all the time...also travel I guess).

From what I've heard, the pseudo-sequels were far from terrible, so I don't doubt that these games will be good/decent. Altair and Ezio got their extra time in the spotlight, so it's only fair that Connor (and perhaps Aveline?) get some more exploitation.

Unless they died in their games and I don't know it since I didn't read any spoilers. :/

Seeing as how this is the Assassin's Creed series, the possible "dopey AI partner" would be *extremely* dopey.

OP:I don't know about this. For one thing, am I the only that sees a wasted potential in the way they are handling their magical no strings time-hopping Animus machine? I mean, they have a plot device that can literally take them to any point in any time period ever, and still, over the course of five main games, they have had three protagonists, and are possibly going to stay with boring Conor even after this game.

Anyway, the Assassin's Creed series was lost on me a long time ago, when they decided to appeal to the largest majority of customers and abandoned interesting plot and characters in favor of new game modes that aren't interesting or fun.

Blegh...another one? In a year? Colonial America was boring enough through the first run through. If it has to happen, how about a stronger emphisis on targeted killing aspect. You know, research a guy, research his routine, get the lay of the areas he hangs out in, then silently kill him and escape while the guards wonder what the hell just happened. You know, like an assassin?

Instead of the general MO in recent games of "Go up to gates, kill all guards that show up, including the target, which despite the fact he's a VIP, generally rushes right up to me to die in combat instead of GTFO"

Now, if they did that, where the game went back to having to have an actual plan of infiltrating and attack, having a co-op partner would be awesome. Otherwise, you're just going to end up with two one-man armies walking around.

Yes, by all means, let's have more games featuring a protagonist with the charisma of sponge soaked in vinegar.
Take note, Ubisoft: This concept worked for AC2 because those games had a main character who was actually likeable. AC3, on the other hand, was a failure in terms of writing and gameplay, and the one thing that could make it conceivably worse is the presence of some other twit I'd need to coordinate my efforts with in order to proceed through your boring glitch-fest.

Have they learned nothing from Guitar Hero's example? It doesn't matter how good the games are, if you keep pumping them out at such an alarming rate people are going to get sick of them.

As someone who had very little interest in this recent installment I would love to tell them that colonial America was such a step back from 17th-18th(?) century Italy. So I'd personally like to see them go further back in time to maybe China or some other country with rich culture at the time.

17th-18th Italy? Try late 15th, that was Ezio's time. But your are right it was soooo much better.

OT: The setting was boring, the characters were boring, Connor was beyond boring and the story was...wait for it....BORING! As long as the Ass Creed games are set in Colonial America, with Connor even remotly involved with the plot I will not be buying it.

Ha, I knew I was probably wrong about that. For some reason I just completely forgot what time period those 3 games were set in even though I played all 3 of Ezio's games. Here's hoping they leave Colonial America alone from now on.

"Our story will end with December 24th's Mayan thingy" SO... Why am I not surprised that they're going to release another one? Since the second title I stopped caring about the franchise "new open world plan-before-acting" tactics, and no cutscenes that keep you from playing, I saw none of that in the second. But Désilets dropped out from it, so I'm not surprised that they deviated from the original mechanics at all. And making the controls wonkier with every new title didn't either.

I don't care about co-op, I want good controls back, and no fuckin QTEs!

As if we need help going through the game, it's way too easy already.

Survey-takers can respond that this feature is a "must-have," simply "nice to have," or that they're "not interested."
and where is the option "im going to smuggle a bomb into your HQ if you do this, pricks" option?

I only knew it because my girlfriend took History at uni. The American Revolution happened in the late 18th so you were not that wrong.
