Original Tomb Raider Series Awaits You on Steam

Square Enix wants Lara Croft fans to relive the nostalgia of its gun-toting archaeological franchise.

If you have fond memories of Lara Croft's back catalogue, best take yourself over to Steam and see the delights Square Enix has put on offer. Every title from the original Tomb Raider to Tomb Raider: Chronicles (V) is out now, for about $10 apiece.

"The flood of nostalgia that flows from the series' expansive history has been missing," Square Enix said in its announcement. "But that's about to change ..." The only title missing at time of writing is Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, and that's not Square Enix's doing. It doesn't know why Angel of Darkness isn't showing up on the list, but it's checking into the problem and hopes to have it resolved soon.

No doubt Square Enix is hoping all this nostalgia will lead to pre-orders for its latest Tomb Raider, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120103-NYCC-Hands-on-Tomb-Raider] due March 2013. Fair play to them for taking this step; there's a lot of fans out there who want to relive the series' glory days and, at $10 per, it's hard to say no to Lara.

The many times I watched my dad play these games on the PSX are some of my favorite childhood memories, and are what essentially got me into gaming. Ironically enough, I could never get into the series myself. Even for their time, the terrible polygonal graphics created a lot of artificial difficulty. Nonetheless, it's cool to see that they are being rereleased.

10 bucks sounds like a bit much, but then again, that's about as much as they cost on PSN, unless I'm wrong.

This sounds great on the surface, but it's a bit pricey isn't it? I mean $10/£6.99 a piece for pretty old (but still awesome) games is pushing it a bit.

Also, you can get a trilogy pack containing 1, 2 and 3 all together for $10 from Good Old Games, so why buy those three on Steam for triple the price?

Angel of Darkness was my favourite of the Core Design Tomb Raiders, in a storyline kind of way at any rate. Such a shame it was broken and horrendously buggy. I'd certainly pay to see it re-released, so long as the bugs were fixed too!

Because Angel of Darkness is a pile of poop? Steam auto-detects when something is so vile, it needs to be shot in to the sun and then spares the rest of the world from it.

Didn't work for Revelations 2012, unfortunately.

why are you guys reporting on this exactly? gog already released the series and they dont have any drm attached to it, yet they didn't actually get any coverage.

I already have them on disc, both PC and PS, but I'm still wondering whether or not the steam version of TR1 has music like the PS1 version does for the sake of convenience. It isn't the same without it really.

If they're the same anyone would probably be better off getting them on disc. I got them all for under £5.

Not only is it cheaper on GOG.com, but there's less risk of compatibility issues with current-era PCs. I love Steam, but I've had problems in the past running older software I bought from them. By contrast, GOG doesn't release a classic title until they know for certain it runs on current-generation hardware and OS - mostly thanks to DOSbox.

It's too little too late, Steam. I picked up the first three games as a bundle for only $5, so why the hell do I want to pay $9.99 for just one of them? The first game came out in 1996, for fuck's sake.

Blizzard pulled this same bullshit not to long ago. Up until the release of Diablo III, they had Diablo II up on their digital store at retail price. Retail price for a game that came out in 2000!

I guess it's a matter of taste. The first time I played Tomb Raider was on the PC. It had no music per se, only some incidental pieces here and there, and mostly ambient tracks. It added inmensely to the sense of isolation and forboding TR1 had. Once I saw the PS1 one with all the music I was like "turn it off!, turn it off! I want the silence back!".

It confounds me how can they sell such old games at such outragous prices, GOG sells Tomb Raider 1-3 [http://www.gog.com/gamecard/tomb_raider_123] for $10 in a single package and Last Revelation & Chronicles [http://www.gog.com/gamecard/tomb_raider_the_last_revelation_chronicles] in another single package of $10.

I'm not a fan of Tomb Raider to begin with, but I still find those prices a bit ludicrous for such old games, especially when GOG sells a better deal with those games.

Through the rose coloured nostalgia glasses people tend to forget that the older a game is, the harder it is (in purely artificial ways). Some recent run ins with this fact have imprinted me with great trepidation regarding classic titles.

Uh....no. These were great, groundbreaking games back in 1996, but oh my god these have so not held up well. At all. Big, empty levels with no sense of direction, terrible controls, a practically non-existent camera, and just a general feel of boredom throughout. Just get Anniversary instead, it recaptures the feeling of the original while actually being fun and enjoyable.

I am surprised by the price point Steam went for on this, because normally if Steam and GOG offer the same title, the prices are comparable.
