UPDATE End of Nations Switches Developer

Petroglyph Games, which recently suffered significant layoffs, is no longer developing End of Nations.

Earlier this week End of Nations developer Petroglyph Games suffered significant layoffs [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120934-End-of-Nations-Studio-Suffers-Layoffs], and among those who lost their jobs was the game's writer and designer, Adam Stevens. Petroglyph has now lost the property altogether, and development of End of Nations is now with Trion Worlds.

End of Nations community manager Myll Erik broke the news, in a forum post [http://forums.endofnations.com/end-nations-general-discussions/general-discussion/7018-end-nations-status-update.html]. "As End of Nations was reaching the pre-launch phase in its lifecycle," said Erik, "we officially brought the game development in house to Trion Worlds and will complete the development internally." Trion Worlds had previously been the publisher of End of Nations, but the company also develops games, among them the fantasy MMO RIFT.

"To give you a little sneak peek into what we are working on," said Erik, "some of the changes you'll notice will include improvements that ease the learning curve for new players, a revamped UI system, advancements in player strategy, and most importantly a more polished overall game."

UPDATE: In an official statement, Petroglyph has confirmed that it is no longer working on End of Nations. It has also confirmed that the layoffs previously reported did take place, but that the actual number was 19 and not 30 members of staff.

"The team at Petroglyph is very excited about End of Nations, a title which earned more than 50 nominations and awards while in development, and looks forward to its upcoming release," said Petroglyph.

Part of me can't help but wonder. Petroglyph Games was made from the remaining WestWood Studious execs and employees. Might this have been the fate of WestWood if they were not bought out?
One can only wonder, but as for me, sadness, I did the beta for the game, and despite its fair share of issues, mostly the fact that it was a beta, it was shaping up to be a good game, and the first great mmorts.

Hopefully it will get released without too many major gameplay changes to it.
